Default How do you deal with stress?

Since June life has been craptastic, and I am having trouble dealing with all the stress. It is affecting my health(constantly stomach sick), I can't sleep and I feel like I am going to slap the next person to piss me off. It isn't as simple as removing the things causing me stress, as some of the events have been pretty life changing(losing my dad, ending a friendship), and I can't kill the exes for obvious reasons. I try to stay positive, tell myself it can always be worse, but to be honest I am at the end of my rope here. Any one have any suggestions for dealing with stress: book suggestions, ways to work through it etc?

You need to take up and focus on a hobby that you enjoy doing daily and are passionate about. Could be anywhere from sports, working out, gaming, cooking, cycling, hiking. Keep focusing on positive activities that you enjoy doing.

Like what was said already Exercise worked for me.

I ended up joining a Crossfit gym which worked well for me. I ended up making a lot of like minded friends that helped me stick with it.

I have been doing a lot of walking, but all that does is give me more time to think. Might be time for a gym membership.

Punch him in the face when he's sleeping and then spit on him.

Although it might or might not work, how about a vacation to at least take your mind off things a bit so you're not stuck in your daily routine. Might open your eyes to something new.

In addition to working out, how about going to the gun range and unloading a few rounds?

As weird as it probably makes me - Lego. I don't stress out often, but when I do I can go buy the biggest most complicated set from the Lego store that takes 16 hours to build, and for 16 hours I won't think about anything else.

It's important to let your brain "off the hook" somehow.

Exercise probably only helps if you are going hard enough that you can't think of much else. So either strength exercises or intense cardio are probably a better idea than long walks. Sports teams are also a good option. CSSC has lots of choices, and it is a good way to meet new people, and take your mind of regular life for one evening a week.

I've been having a pretty stressful year, and it's probably not the healthiest coping mechanism, but I've been drinking more. Not like gin for breakfast or anything, but instead of drinking one beer when I get home from work, I'm more likely to have five fingers of rum.

Sex is a great stress reliever, but it can be tough to get into the right headspace for that when you are feeling stressed. Maybe a couple glasses of wine will help get you in the mood?

Also, talking to someone can really help. Most large employers have some form of employee assistance program that provides either telephone or in-person counselling. It's for exactly these sort of situations where you are feeling like your problems are interfering with your ability to function at a high level. These counselors will probably be able to assist you with better advice than mine.

Good luck out there, and take care of yourself.

EDIT: Also, the suggestion of a vacation is a good one. Even a trip to Canmore for the weekend can help you break out of the mental rut and see things differently. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just out of the normal routine.

we all de-stress differently - only you know the answer...

Spikers goes and hides in his man cave and plays with toys... I'm much the same - gotta tinker with something. Could be creative - could be night out with girlfriends... Could be stealing an ecoboost and drifting hwy 22 at mach 6 with your hair on fire.

While we all get sh*t piled on us - sometimes seemingly to the breaking point - the stress is all self imposed... It's all about how we see and deal with it ourselves.

Ok I've psychobabbled enough - there's also free walk in first come first serve counselling over on 36st in the old ikea mall... (go early or you'll sit around all frigging day).

Breathing exercises (Pranayama). Basically I inhale and then immediately exhale deeply 15 - 20 times until I feel slightly light headed or dizzy. I then exhale fully and hold my breath for as long as I can without stressing myself too much. I then take a large inhale and again hold it in as long as I can. Then continue repeating the cycle until I feel fully relaxed.

    Take care of yourself baygirl.

This is a serious post from yours truly

For myself, it's never one thing, it's a combination of everything. I spend every day reading something inspirational to broaden my perspective. I joke around a lot because I don't take things seriously or personally. I do care but I get mistaken for not giving a shit.

"Happy people don't have the best of everything, they make the best of everything".

    In no random order.

    1. Talk about it. Get it out. Don't keep it inside. Allow yourself time to heal.
    2. Surround yourself with friends and family who care for you and support you.
    3. Focus on things that are important and don't get overwhelmed.
    4. Establish a routine and keep yourself busy, kids, exercise, sex, yoga, meditating, read etc.
