I agree with the driver. If we can't mention Christmas or Halloween because of religious reasons, shouldn't we treat this the same way?

No, because being gay isn't a religion. Not the same thing.Originally posted by lilmira

But nor should the guy be forced to drive the bus. Everyone wins.

Of course not, but his religion doesn't work with gay marriage.Originally posted by frizzlefry

I don't agree with the whole ass-backward approach. This whole thing to avoid offending people is way over excessive. I'm just pointing out the inconsistency.

With the bus that said Merry Christmas, it was to have it not displayed, not a bus driver who was against it and wouldn't drive it. Furthermore, Christmas and Halloween are holiday traditions rooted in Canadian culture and history.
I think what it comes down to is that city buses shouldn't be in the business of promoting entire buses that are covered in morally controversial issues. I'm okay with an ad being controversial in nature alongside other ads, its when you have the entire exterior dedicated to the issue.
And if they are going to allow dedicated buses for the promotion of morally controversial issues, they need to allow drivers to opt out of driving that bus. Whether it be sexuality, abortion, pornography, bio-medical ethics, religion etc.
If a christian group was to dedicate a bus to the promotion of Christianity, I would want a clause that all other non-Christians wouldn't be required to ever drive the bus.

You're wrong, they have to accommodate his belief system or they are discriminating against him. He isn't saying anything new, it's a longstanding tenant of the Christian faith that homosexuality is a sin. Those are his beliefs, why does he have to change them?Originally posted by Feruk
You're wrong, he's not. Your rights don't allow you to discriminate on any ground, including religion.
Obvious question of why is he bringing a non-issue to the media aside, he's being respectful about it. It's against his beliefs to promote that and he's not being hateful about it, just asking for respect of his beliefs by not being assigned to drive it.
There's a lot worse grievance collectors out there than this guy. I'm sure he has a motive but, it's a relevant one. It's highlighting the new norm that it's typically no longer ok anymore to be either white, or Christian (depending on the issue of the day).

This isn't discrimination, it's just accommodation. It's no different than when muslims don't eat at a barbeque because the hot dogs are pork. He's still allowed to go to the barbeque, he's just eating a burger or potato salad and instead of a hot dog.Originally posted by Feruk

In this case, the driver doesn't feel like the pride bus coincides with his religious beliefs, so assign him to another bus. As long as CT doesn't give him an ultimatum of drive the bus or quit, there's nothing prejudicial or discriminatory about the matter.
The question, as Sugarphreak pointed out, is why is this being made public? It's an internal matter that could/should be easily handled by management. Instead, it's playing out in the court of public opinion, and it's fairly obvious why.

Nowhere in the bible does is say "Thou shall not advertise for man who lays with other men"
He's driving a fucking bus, he's not being asked to marry two men. Driving a rainbow painted bus is not violating his religious beliefs.
What's next, Jewish truck drivers that won't haul bacon or christian painters that refuse to use more than 3 colours of the rainbow on a single project?
Think of this saying... Knowing is scaring than not knowing at all.Originally posted by blitz
It's not like they're asking him to have sex with another man. It's just a bunch of paint on a bus.
Sure he drives a bus day to day and members of the LGBT may ride said bus and nobody would be the wiser.
Now take a bus that has the colors all over it and you know DAMN well members of the LGBT will ride it MORE because of the colors or at least those members who feel like making a point.
So stick that drive on that bus and now he knows for sure he is driving those members around and that makes him uncomfortable so good for him for standing up to his beliefs.
Who are you to say that isn't violating his religious beliefs? I'd suggest you don't understand his beliefs for you to make such an opinion stance. If he feels driving the bus would be equal to promoting homosexuality then he can respectfully ask to be reassigned or, take a day off or whatever and he shouldn't be punished for it. You can't cherry-pick who you choose to accommodate.Originally posted by blitz

The the record, if he came out guns-blazing and hateful I may not argue the same position as that wouldn't be very "Christian". But as it stands, he's within his rights.

Thing is wouldn't calgary transit want the drivers of these buses during the events to be eager and excited for the role?
Seems like a win win for everyone to just have someone else who is more supportive drive the bus. And no need for controversy.
It's the same as having a sign up sheet in a business for people who actually want to work a stat and get double time vs the people who would rather spend the time with their families ( Xmas thanksgiving etc.)

You're right. Being gay is nothing. It is just something people do with other people. Why does it need to be its own "thing"?Originally posted by frizzlefry
No, because being gay isn't a religion. Not the same thing.
We don't have "short-haired-SUV-driving-soccer-mom pride" or "redneck-metal-mulisha-lucky-beer pride". Why do we need "I-like-people-with-the-same-junk-as-me pride"?
As far as I know everything about being gay and married is now legal. So why the activism, flags and parades?

Do Mormon bus drivers get all bent out of shape when they have to pick up drunks after a Stampeder's game?
They're not "supporting" drinking. They're DRIVING.
He should be in more trouble for whining to the media, than for refusing to drive.
First it was blacks, now its the LGBT community, next will be the "cognitively disabled?"

Curse you imageshack..
As long as CT can reasonably accommodate his request, this is a non-issue.
The funny thing I've noticed about this debate (from what I see from Facebook, not Beyond) is that the people most bent out of shape about this are white. They are the strongest advocates of 'FIRE HIS ASS' and all that. Whereas most visible minorities are like 'Why? He believes what he believes. It's a quick schedule fix, if that'.
But again, it's a public issue because he made it a public issue. And that might pose some problems for him with his employer.

What if you had a vegetarian driver refusing to drive a bus with an ad for a pizza joint's meat lovers pizza?
