I've been seconded before. Its just like you're moving departments. I still got the same paycheck/benefits from my company as always, only I sat in another office and reported to a different manager. When the secondment was over, I moved back to my original office. It can be that simple.

    Ah I see.

Secondment is like subcontracting. Only the employee is still an employee (of Company B), not a contractor (to Company C). The employer (Company B) is the contractor, and pays the employee their normal salary, etc.

    ..anyhow, back to the layoffs!

ask your original employer what would happen if your new company ends up not needing you any more. if it's really a secondment then you'll probably have some sort of guarantee that they will have your old job/similar available for you.

Bit more convoluted then that, I'd be leaving my current employer to join a new employer, who would be seconding me to a third company (pipelines)

I feel like anywhere as a contractor is probably a bad idea currently

Surprised to hear that she gets direct deposited that amount every 2 weeks as that is EI max (Maternity or not). You should be deducted taxes on this amount so unless there is top up or something from the company, the direct deposited amount should be less than $1028 every 2 weeks.

The max is $524 every 2 weeks with $10 taken off for taxes, so $1,028 net.

The maximum per week is $524 - they are taking off $10 for tax.

This was the statement from last week:

    Benefit Rate: $524
    Type of Benefit: Parental/childcare benefits
    Gross Amount: $524
    Tax: $10
    Net Amount Paid: $514

Plus my wife made about 60 - 70k in bonuses and pay from the first 2 months of the year before she started receiving EI. Im hoping she wont have to pay more than 5k into extra RRSP's to balance out the tax bill. Last time she had to pay $15K into RRSPs just to balance out the tax bill from receiving maternity benefits.

Can I vote these threads for the most derailed threads of 2015?

Any numbers come out of Plains yet?
I hear a rumor that a big blue service company may have more layoffs coming in the next few weeks

Cool, good to know. I have a friend who is getting the max on EI and he said he is getting about $1600 a month into his pocket. I guess you can get different tax levels.

Contractor can be let go in about 4 weeks notices (usual contract term).

New employee can be let go for less.

The really only difference between the 2 is compensation (straight $ vs employee benefits/holidays).

If you think the new place has potential for growth, employee. If you think you are just getting pimped out to a client of theirs, contract.

Really depends on the contract. I had a couple working for me that could be let go with zero notice. Gave one five days, he was surprised.

Yeah, I just realized that just because I have seen most with 4 weeks built in the contract, doesn't mean every contract has that.

I can confirm that Plains is doing restructuring in both engineering and their business development side.

Just started full time employment for an oil and gas service company I've been contracting to for almost two years. It was either convert to full time employment with them or look for another contracting gig at the end of this month. In this economy, I chose to go full time. Only good thing is they waived all the probation period for benefits etc. if I wasn't the only income earner in the family, I would have love to have taken the enire winter time off and start looking again in March/April 2016. Being responsible sucks...
