Wife's oilsands division - everybody (even the VPs) got bumped down a pay grade. They keep their current salaries but basically this means they won't be eligible for any sort of pay increase for like five years.
Yes, people have already been laid off but there will not likely be anymore layoffs
Yes, people have already been laid off and there will probably be more layoffs as well
No, no one has been laid off yet but there will likely be layoffs in the coming months

I WAS laid off, but have since found other employment

Would everyone agree that this is better than out of a job?Originally posted by suntan

I doubt anyone's going to complain, as they are very highly paid, and they went through 50% layoffs just recently.Originally posted by supe

Yes, I had a 25% reduction earlier this year. Definitely sucked and took some readjusting, but I also have a good amount of contacts/ ex colleagues who are scrambling to find work, and there is not much out there.Originally posted by supe

Heard from people that Jan will have a lot of layoffs. It's already planned, but no one wants to pull the trigger in Dec right before Christmas.
It's going to get worse before it gets better... hope everyone is hanging in ok.
For context: contacts were in large E&Ps.
lol
gave some performance reviews and indicated that regardless of ratings, bonuses are on hold
for the +40 people with kids, they were all "well thats better than the latter" as they recognize that a good review means they are not on the chopping block
the -35 peeps were "pissed"; all about why am I not recognized for my contributions, this is BS etc..
What about the 36-39 group??Originally posted by r3ccOs

They're indifferent that their kids' contributions to the chopping block weren't recognized.Originally posted by never

I believe it. My company's gonna be doing the first "official" round come January. I expect by the end of next year, we'll have ~60% of the office staff working in O&G that we had at the peak in 2014. That won't be proportionately distributed with the small/mid-size feeling the biggest pain.Originally posted by Super_Geo

what I meant to say is this... they seem think that "ranking" by performance is only the means to receive additional compensation, not realizing that it can result in the latter.Originally posted by Mibz

I'm a millennial as most of us are, however the ones that are in the younger sub-demographic are the ones constantly underperforming and are the ones that are positioning this years review as:
"well if I work harder, I don't get anything more"
rather than, if "If I work harder, I won't get fired".
I've typed up like half a dozen replies and none of them convey just how weirded out I am that r3ccOs somehow missed that never and I were joking.

And now I am disappointed.

Ugh this is a depressing thread haha. As a fresh 2015 Electrical Engineer from uofc, employment opportunities have been absolutely horrible. 100+ applications and a less then 10 rejections. Doesn't seem like companies are gonna be hiring back anytime soon

I've posted this in multiple threads over the last couple of years, but it's worth repeating.
Your first job out of university is often very hard to get. You'll work harder to land it, and it'll be less glamourous, then you were led to believe during university. That's not a new phenomenon, and it has nothing to do with the economy. So suck it up and work harder.
