Default The How do your kids get to school thread!

Basically just fill out the poll for how your kids get to school, limiting it to Bus ( charter, CBE, or CT), walk ( can include biking in this), or drive ( whether your kids drive themselves or you drive them).

Multiple kids you decide how to answer!

Lets see what it looks like.

I wont answer as I don't have kids but i either took Calgary transit to school (unsubsidized) or walked (3 km high school). Depended on how cold it was or if i was late etc.

Elementary up to grad 4 i was mostly driven with before and after school care. Occasional biking back then to in the summer. After that it was biking or walking to school in good weather, or grabbing a ride with parents at whatever hours worked for them ( hung out playing sports with friends or went to nearby friends houses for an hour or 2 sometimes).

Basically i have done a bit of everything

Should be able 2 do more than 1 answer...

When I was younger I'd walk or take the bus..
When i was older living in a suburban neigbourhood my HS was downtown and I'd have to take 2 or 3 buses..

For my kids, one gets driven to school and picked up, the other gets picked up and dropped off by school bus.

My kids don't go to the designated school in our area so they take the yellow school bus that picks them up and drops them off a short walking distance from our house.

Heh, for the CBE Highwood Mandarin Bilingual elementary school, I'd swear 95% of the kids enrolled there are driven.

I would say it's probably 50/50. That's where my kids go but they are in Colonel Irvine now, but they share the same buses. It just seems like more people drive because of all the shitty Asian drivers and parkers. I'm Asian so I'm allowed to say that , but I'm a good driver. Also both schools are jam packed because they are the only Mandarin Bilingual schools for elementary and Jr. High in the North so all the Asians go there.

And James Fowler as a future Mandarin bilingual senior high - that's my prediction because once the new NE senior high is built, Fowler will almost be empty.

    So many champagne colored Toyota/Lexus...
Was driven for elementary in the winter / walked in the summer
Jr High was driven, until it got too far then was bussed an hour in the cheeseblock from far north all the way far south.
    HS walk
Uni public transit (yes I know of kids that were driven by their parents on a daily basis to the U)

Last year and the year before, our oldest took the bus (or was SUPPOSED to take the bus) But I got fed up with having to drive him when the bus didn't show up for over half the year in total. It was so great paying that money for nothing. So this year I'm just driving him to save the hassle. It sucked when I found out the congregated stop is right behind our house though.

Both kids ride the bus most days, but the walk to the bus stop is much longer this year than in previous years.

1 Son takes Transit to Beaverbrook. Bus stop is down the street from my house.

Younger son walks to Junior high down the street (other direction)

Bought my house because school was 400 meters away and an easy walk. High School they took the bus.

We thought we had planned well... bought our house across from an elementary school before it was built. Started a family and the CBE finished the school before he was school age... perfect, right?.... Nope, ended up getting our son in Westmount Charter in Parkdale.
Financially we can't afford to live in Parkdale but we're lucky that my wife is a stay at home mom so she drives him everyday to school. We're looking to move closer.

Couple questions - were you unable to get your son into the school across from you? If so, why Westmount Charter - were there not other CBE schools that are closer to your home?

Westmount only takes gifted kids. His son probably needed the differentiated teaching which isn't available through the CBE till grade 4.

My son did get accepted in the school across from us and accepted in another charter school (FFCA) but he has a special need which we felt Westmount was best prepared to help him with.
