Several weeks ago, my building's parkade was broken into and my Trek bike was looted and vandalized. A bunch of parts were stolen and the cables were cut. Since I've had it for about 10 years, I decided to buy a new bike as the parts alone would have been around $400 to repair it.
Last week I picked up a new Specialized bike which I've only taken out for two rides. This morning I discover that someone broke into the parkade again last night, cut the lock, and stole the new bike. I filed a police report but realize that I'm not going to see the bike again and have come to terms with the fact that I'm out $1,000 as it's not worth claiming with the deductible on my policy.
Then about an hour ago, I get a phone call from the Calgary Police saying they have my bike. They told me they could bring it to me within 15 minutes. Turns out they were on a routine patrol downtown and saw a crackhead with a bike that they thought was a little too nice for him. When they asked him about it, he confessed that "someone had given it to him" and that it wasn't his bike.
I'm sharing this is because all too often we hear about "police harassment" or "profiling" but often it's just good cops relying on their instincts. The guy who had my new bike would probably tell a different version of the story about how these cops rolled up on him for no reason and started harassing him. Turns out they were right to harass him because he was in possession of stolen property.
