Default My experience with the Calgary Police

Several weeks ago, my building's parkade was broken into and my Trek bike was looted and vandalized. A bunch of parts were stolen and the cables were cut. Since I've had it for about 10 years, I decided to buy a new bike as the parts alone would have been around $400 to repair it.

Last week I picked up a new Specialized bike which I've only taken out for two rides. This morning I discover that someone broke into the parkade again last night, cut the lock, and stole the new bike. I filed a police report but realize that I'm not going to see the bike again and have come to terms with the fact that I'm out $1,000 as it's not worth claiming with the deductible on my policy.

Then about an hour ago, I get a phone call from the Calgary Police saying they have my bike. They told me they could bring it to me within 15 minutes. Turns out they were on a routine patrol downtown and saw a crackhead with a bike that they thought was a little too nice for him. When they asked him about it, he confessed that "someone had given it to him" and that it wasn't his bike.

I'm sharing this is because all too often we hear about "police harassment" or "profiling" but often it's just good cops relying on their instincts. The guy who had my new bike would probably tell a different version of the story about how these cops rolled up on him for no reason and started harassing him. Turns out they were right to harass him because he was in possession of stolen property.

The CPS and others recover millions of dollars of items each year but most people dont keep records, report or mark the items before they are stolen. Good job!

Take his bike to his unit instead of leaving it in parkade. Or start riding $300 Walmart bikes.

I was using two bike locks. A Kryptonite lock securing the back wheel to the frame and a heavy gauge steel lock about the diameter of your thumb securing the bike to the rack.

Use the u lock to secure the frame and wheel to the rack, and the cable to secure the second tire.

I live in forrest lawn, and our cops have definitely stepped it up a notched.

Watched a cop bring a vagrant back into 7-11, persoanlly pay for the stolen items, then let them go.

Watched a group of cops be polite, greet, and, open doors for customers, and sweep up glass after some apparent vandalism at another 7-11.

Man, did I get a surprise to see this was a feel-good story about the cops. Certainly on Beyond there have been our fair share of individuals feeling they are mistreated. Sometimes they were, sometimes they were not.

But this is great - I've had reasonably good experiences with cops over the last decade, really. A little high-horseness sometimes, but otherwise the police have conducted themselves exactly as I would have expected. Any poor judgement calls by the cops always seems to blow up as ammunition to the anti-police movement. That is unfortunate, but it's good that we insist on holding the police accountable.

Glad you got your bike back. Not sure if FixedGear's suggestion would make a difference, but sounds like you're doing what you can to protect your property.

What about a motion activated wifi cam that sends email when active?

But man, Ive never.owned a bike worth over $200. Is there really a difference for commuting? My current bike was used, had blown out front shocks, so I bolted them solid, and Ive ridden it 10k one way to work and back.... Ive eyed the $1200+ stuff, and it looks cool.....

Yeah, I was surprised too. I've had quite a few dealings with the police in my 45 years living here, some on the "wrong side" and I've only really had a couple that I thought had a bit of attitude.

Considering the bullshit that the average officer has to put up with every day , I'm surprised how friendly and professional most of them are. I couldn't do it.

Your telling me, I could go zero to 60 3x as fast in a expensive bike, over my cheapie?

Stop from 100 to zero in half the distance? Triple my top speed?

Or, are you talking purely status and aesthetics?

Sure as hell wouldn't want to commute in a Ferrari every day.. Between the rough ride, heavy clutch (if manual) and worrying all day about where I parked it..

I have seen many commuters take an old bike and convert it to a single speed with a manageable gearing. Cheap, effective and less moving parts the better. As code says, tfitment is key but cheap and simplistic usability is nice. You don't need much fancy to ride pavement to work.
