    Pretty much.

After the NDP took a hit in Quebec, it caused the shift to the Liberals everywhere else.

In other words, Gilles Duceppe and Stephen Harper helped lift Justin Trudeau to becoming the prime minister of a majority government. Absolutely incredible.

Most people have a tendency to think of it like a household budget, which is not at all how it works. That's more like a trade deficit, because the money doesn't stay in circulation within the household.

An easy way to think about this is this: consider the fact that a country could have everyone earning 1/4 of their previous income, and 75% of the businesses closing up shop, BUT your government didn't spend more than it brought in. That's an example of a "surplus", but clearly not a strong economy.

And there are examples of where deficit spending led to the strongest economic periods in modern history. The obvious example is the post WW2 boom - aka "the Golden Age of Capitalism".

Budget and Surplus are actually inputs to the economy. The standard outputs are things like GDP growth, inflation, and unemployment. Like a new business, it's normal, and necessary to invest heavily in order to reach growth.

And those numbers do indeed speak for themselves (spoiler: they're bad)

What does this mean in terms of Harper's performance?

Probably nothing. Sitting Prime Minister really has very little effect relative to the global economy, save for extreme cases of intervention, which they rarely have the balls to do.

Well then elaborate...? Or clarify or whatever it is you need to do that isn't just a low effort quip that adds nothing to the discussion.

There's going to be a lot of the "deer in headlights" look from Trudeau the next five years.

Nah. He will step down as leader and just be an MP again.

Raise GST, huge deficits to raise health transfer payments to provinces, I can't even imagine what his child care benefit expansion will cost.

On the other hand maybe he'll pull a Chretien and renege on his campaign promises.

I'll say the same thing as I said on a facebook post to the same effect. In the provincial election we had two parties right of center that split the vote allowing the NDP to come up the middle. In the federal Election Alberta only has one party right of center, so they win and the two parties left of center fought over the scraps.

It's the problem with having two conservative parties in a conservative province.

Nah. People voted for the party that taxed them the least that wasn't full of racists.
