Default Victim assaulted and robbed by men posing as police officers

Two men posing as police officers used a flashing strobe light to pull over vehicles in north Calgary and demand money, even assaulting and robbing a victim, allege city police.

Calgary police are investigating the incidents, which occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday night in the communities of Beddington, Harvest Hills and North Haven.

Officials say in a 15-minute period, three vehicles were pulled over after a car drove up behind them with a flashing strobe light.

Once the vehicles were stopped, the men who pulled the victims over demanded money. In the last incident, police say the victim was pulled from his vehicle, assaulted and robbed.

Police tracked the car to a home in the Beddington Heights area and took three people believed to be connected to the incidents into custody.

Officers found a vehicle at the residence that matched the description of the one involved and officers found lights that could be used to pull people over.

Police continue to investigate and charges are pending.

Det. Lawrence Mooney with the Calgary Police Service said officers carry identification and anyone stopped by law enforcement can ask for proper identification.

“If you’re stopped by a marked unit, you should be looking for a uniformed member to approach you,” he said.

“If you’re stopped by anything else, satisfy yourself that the person is a police officer.”

In a news release, police reminded citizens the law requires members of the public to pull over when approached by a police vehicle flashing its lights behind them.

However, police told citizens that most traffic stops in Calgary are conducted in marked vehicles or in unmarked vehicles driven by police officers dressed in full uniform.

If you’re pulled over by an unmarked vehicle containing an undercover officer wearing plain clothes, the officer will use a red/blue-coloured strobe light located inside the grill or in the vehicle’s interior.

If a driver is not sure about the vehicle pulling them over, they’re encouraged to call 911.

If a "cop" demanded money from me, I think the first thing I would do would be drive away. Not sit there and argue.

Glad they got caught so quick.

Maybe these guys saw me do it, and gave them the idea!

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

    Hahaha! That's funny.

On a more serious note, it's interesting what Mooney is saying in the article.

I once saw a guy get pulled over while he was riding a sport bike. The car that pulled him over was a late model blacked out Altima with only little LED lights in the grill. I expected an officer in uniform to get out but nope, plain clothes.

If I was the rider, I would have felt pretty uneasy about it.
