HDTV Antenna (NO CABLE TV)

So I got rid of my cable tv and now need an alternative.

Is anyone using an HDTV Antenna?

What's a good model to use?

How many channels can I expect to get?

Quality?

Quality noticeably better than a Shaw HD cable box, along with 5.1 DD sound. You get up to 6 channels depending on what you can pick up from your location (CBC, CTV, OMNI, CTS, Global, and CityTV).

The picture quality is what all TV should be, Full uncompressed 1080P video.

If there is a show that is playing on a channel I can get over the air, i'll switch over to my antenna to watch instead.

As for the antenna, I picked one up from Visions form about $30, and it works ok. If you are willing to wait, then go with Mono price for a far better deal.

Anyone got amplifiers to distribute signal from a single antenna to multiple TVs via existing coax cables in the house?

You might just be better off buying an antenna for each TV.

Its nice on Saturday night to pretend to be a bar and have two NHL games on.

I do this. The antenna is in the basement mechanical room with no windows, goes into an amplifier and then into a Tablo, and then to the rest of the house. Works great and I get full HD for about 5 channels (I only watch CTV, Global, CBC, and mostly for news).

How did you get signal in the basement? I tried at least 3 to 4 antennas and none of them seem to fetch a signal down there.

I think in Calgary, or at least where we are located at (Skyview) we have access to 3-5 channels IIRC although I don't recall the last time we actually watched a TV channel.

A buddy of mine and I built some basic antennas out of coat hangers one day. I live partly in teh shadow created by nose hill, so my reception was spotty. His in airdrie was much better.

I grabbed this. They sell it for 13 bucks and it works fine.

I also noticed that if I just plug in a coaxial cable to my tv and leave the other end unplugged I get all the channels except for some channel id never watch anyway.

So in the end I this is all I needed. I live in the downtown area so I'm kinda in a valley. If you live in the hills it might not work so good for you.

I am in Panorama and have a RCA antenna on my roof pointing south and a rca booster. I get 4 channels but the quality isnt the best sometimes depending on weather. I seem to only be able to get about 60% signal strength.

I have coax going from the antenna to my basement then back up to the main level so i am thinking that might be why i have poor signal?? To much coax?

HDTV antennae suffer from sports car syndrome.

That is, people think it goes faster if the doors open upwards instead of sideways, and the steering wheel is made of carbon fiber instead of plastic.

That said: I find that the no longer easily findable $3 RCA Dollarama antenna will do Calgary just fine at a range of Calgary.

At a distance of 72 miles, I got all six Calgary channels with a quality Yagi antenna & corner reflector, mounted outdoors with no obstructions. ( Digiwave ANT2190 )

The hardest part is aligning it with Canada Olympic Park, and laying it flat instead of trying to use it like a satellite dish.
