Putin has been saber rattlin for years now. He is still ticked about sanctions against mother russia after they forcefully invaded Ukraine and took power. Russia is also pissed about Syria, and are on the opposite side in that civil war too.

Putin has gotten power hungry over the years, and is trying to flex his muscle. They have been flying their long range bombers down the Canadian and US west coast for a long time, and the US has been sending up fighter escorts with tone locks on them waiting for them to turn east towards the coast line.

I am not putting much stock in it. It is nothing more than posturing, and the russian economy is no position to drag itself into a full out war with the US, France or Britain. They may try to take a few border countries, but they would get smacked pretty hard, pretty quickly, so it would be a waste of resources for them.

Russia is armed, granted, but if they tried anything with nukes, the world (the USA especially) would react pretty fucking fast, and last I heard, the US has a carrier group well within the field of operations for SW Russia.

I am of the belief that this is nothing more than a gorilla beating it's chest and trying to show it is strong without actually challenging the alpha.

Long story short, the UN or NATO will broker a deal with them to stand down in exchange for easing sanctions, much like it did with North Korea.

The nuclear posturing is just fist shaking. Sad but thats how geopolitics are played out - a giant sandbox of kids essentially, with no oversight.

If Russia/US/China etc. wanted destruction, there are a host of non-nuclear weapons they would much rather use.For eg. Scalar energy weapons have been around for 50+ years and they can level a large area in an instant, without missiles or nuclear radiation.

Putin had one of the rare "successful" military campaigns after WWII, that being Crimea. The US hasn't really had a win after WWII.

This. Russia has no intentions of going to war with the US. A war with the US is a war with a coalition force, which will be overwhelming (not the US wouldn't be by itself) and Russia would inevitably lose.

The only alternative where they could defeat the US is via nuclear war, and Putin knows that would basically mean the end of the world. Call him what you will, but he's not an idiot.

    I agree with spikerS.

A buddy of mine recently brought this up thinking shit was gonna hit the fan.

IMO it's just Putin being Putin lol.

Nuclear war and WW3 will be total annihilation but the status quo is more stable than people think.

You don't just hit the red button without massive consequences.

Putin is losing control due to economy worsening. A phoney war will get his own citizen on side and support him.

    And Bush did 9/11.

Russia can get away with so much right now. I don't think people really understand how "easy" it would be for them to steam roll into a whole bunch of ex-soviety states and basically give NATO the stinkeye.

He knows no-one will do anything about it.

I think the Russians are honestly worried about long term expansion by Nato and an eventual "revolution" supported by the US. when the ussr broke up they had assurances from Nato that they wouldn't expand east. Now that Nato has expanded east Russia doesn't trust the west. Ukraine's revolution tipped Russia over the edge and now they are in full defensive paranoia mode. Putin took over Crimea as it is too important strategically to let Nato take control of that area. Russia imo is willing to go ww3 over Ukraine and that is why us supports Ukraine but doesn't deploy full military power there.

I think this is pretty bang on. This is why Putin is trying so hard to get Trump elected. Clinton would just continue Obamas path of being calm in the media while sanctioning the shit out of Russia, which makes for boring propaganda compared to the insane sound bites Putin could goad Trump into making.
