E43 AMG
Man this is going to piss some people off. Too bad really, I thought the idea of AMG Sport was actually a good one.
People are holding off C450 orders after hearing how C400 got lowballed on trade-in due to one and done naming.
Buying C400/C450/C43 is going to suck for depreciation. Gotta lease with high residual.
2015 C400 - 1 year and done
2016 C450 - 1 year and done
2017 C43 - 1 year and done
2018 C43 - 4th year mid cycle refresh
What a mess

I am still just trying to understand how an E43 could be a performance car.
The thing weighs like 4,200 lb. Which is fine when you have 560 hp to haul its ass around. but 360? that's a 35% cut from the E63.
0-60 well north of 5 seconds? In a modern AMG?

May be they will push that to 400hp for E63 for offset that couple hundred pounds and keep it under 5s. Ford is doing it for the Continental, there should be more room left for Merc to boost the engine a bit more for E class.Originally posted by killramos

The E43 might get a totally different engine as there is rumours of MB going to a straight 6 instead of a V6.
Then again, the E400 on display in Detroit had the same V6 as the C400/C450/C43.

What did it used to mean before they introduced these new cars? At the end of the day, other than a couple of entry level models to make the brand more affordable, so the top models are still as bad ass as they were before the SLC43, C43, etc.Originally posted by schocker

It's not like the AMG name was limited production or anything, there was nothing exclusive about it, unless you owned maybe a Black Series which isn't even comparable in desirability to say Porsche's limited run cars.
Facelift would be 2019. MB follows the 4/3 year generation/facelift timeline. Also, residuals are pretty good at 62%, and interest rate average/borderline not worth it. Definitely a better bet than finance/buying one for the C400 and C450s.Originally posted by Xtrema

It's still an entry level model so no new motors or anything silly. They'll just slap a bigger turbo on the 3L V6 TT, pump out 400-450hp or so and call it a day, no need to spend big bucks developing the entry level model. It would replace the E550.Originally posted by benyl

If anything, this new strategy makes things much simpler, and we won't end up with owners like killramos who gets ridiculed all the time on owning a fake performance car.
I mean let's be honest, BMW is going in this direction as well with the M2. Audi will follow closely and just call everything RS by next gen. MB is just playing follow the leader right now.

I know it is only name but I liked it being separated like S vs RS. Just makes them seem less special even though I realize there are tons of them all over.
Yea it really isn't even a slightly new concept. And it isn't isolated to the big three germans.Originally posted by rage2

Aston did it with the Vantage
Porsche did it with the Cayman
On MB side they made the SLK
Ford has the V6 and Ecoboost Mustang, Chevy the RS Camaro
Ferrari has the California
Lamborghini had the Gallardo
And you know what, every single one of those decisions pissed a vocal minority of people off who saw their previous "investment" being diluted.
Ultimately any company with a valuable brand will do everything they can to eek out every single dollar out of that brand possible. It has been done with the general brands. We are just seeing it done with the sub brands.
The bigger issue is when the companies stop making good cars at the top end and just coast on marketing of their brands that used to mean something ( Honda ).
If the car is good, buy it, if it isn't don't. Its that simple.

The next gen A/CLA/GLA is getting bumped up to the 450hp range. The base engine is 200hp, so yea, makes sense to add something in between.Originally posted by killramos

Nothing's changed with the new entry level AMGs. We don't have a large number of AMG43 snobs thinking they're the shit, the 63's are still getting better, and MB has more money in the war chest to do crazy shit like their F1 road car. What's the problem? haha
I still find it weird that killramos is now team AMG. The only thing that would make this thread funnier is if he went for a 43 instead of the 63.

As long as the car is good I don't really care what is written on the trunk, still crossing my fingers for an A45 to make it here...
Maybe one day BMW will make a car that makes me want to buy one again, might take them a while though as I am a bit underwhelmed as of late... More likely I buy an old one for shits and giggles ( E92 or an E64 are high on my list ) .

Of course it's brand dilution. But who cares?
I think it's mostly North Americans that worry about this stuff. It's why we came up with a bunch of japanese luxury brands for cars that are labelled their "normal" brands in other countries - Honda NSX, etc.
Please everyone knows AMG stands for Add More Gas
