    Of course not.

For the third time, this is what I'm wondering:

What is the actual cost of new infrastructure, maintenance, etc, and what are we all paying for that? It's obvious I'm hinting at the possibility of being charged for more than the actual cost of said maintenance, etc.

Also, both electricity and gas charge around $6.50 a month for an "Administration Charge". The charge is claimed to be for billing and customer service. Multiply that by all the customers, and the end result would be a number that should be justified.

Is anyone actually reading Seth's posts, or just joining the seth hate bandwagon?

I'd personally like to know if I am being screwed out of money because the utilities can't manage themselves, without pouring through endless documents. Otherwise, we'll end up like Ontario with the Ontario Hydro fiasco

Questioning the justification and/or amount of these charges is completely reasonable and prudent.

    Thanks for that codetrap.

I wish the Canadian Taxpayer Federation would start a political party.

I guess it doesn't matter though. The industry is very complex, and is also the main driving force of our economy. Those are two characteristics that make an industry almost impossible to properly regulate.

What I would like to know if how come my utilities are almost double what they were lets say 5 years ago if I'm not using more? That is called gauging I guess.

our utilities are dirt cheap here, if you used electricity the way you do here in Europe your bill would be 2 - 3x the price.

Just a fact of life. Especially even after deregulation, all the companies are still running an unionized staff.

It's just like refineries not passing down saving from cheap oil.

It's just like groceries stores are always passing cost to consumers but not the savings.

If you don't want to be gouged, you create and an alternative to the status quo. I can tell you that AUC who represented us as taxpayers is doing a pretty good job at keep cost down. It's the uninformed initiatives from the politicians who have 0 insight to operations on the ground that is making decisions that is going to cost us.

Seth, if you are looking at unnecessary cost, stay ranting on early retirement of coal plants. They will be the #1 unnecessary spending ever as we as Albertan taxpayers will owe $billions to decommission them early. That's like buying a new car and junking it after 12 months.

Some well thought out and thorough replies. Thanks.

I was looking for some solid numbers, but unfortunately, that's not going to happen. In hindsight however, the distribution charges seem ok when compared to $6.50 a month for the so called Administrative charge.

With that said, I've always defended our oil production, as there is no viable alternative. Ok, well maybe nuclear, but that's not going to happen.

As far as solar and/or wind goes? Well, I'm 47 years old right now, and I was going to try and go that route when I was in my early 20's. That is, until I researched them and found those "alternatives" were ludicrous on every level. 27 years later, and they still are.

If people are questioning their utility bills now wait until the coal's shut down.

Is part of the cost to the entity protecting us? Lol. I guess I'm just a sheeple though as I pay way to much to enmax for just myself and I'm mostly gone during the day, I've asked my dog but he won't fess up I'll probably get further with him than enmax

AUC is a publically funded entity. The AESO is too I think.

I just paid my bill for this month and I've been really sick so sitting on my ass constantly with the fireplace on. $225.50.

    Slight derail.

The bills you posted are electricity and gas only right? So with water and waste it would be about $300?
