Default DDR 3 RAM question, pc3-10700, 2400mhz etc what works with what.

I have an ASUS Maximus extreme motherboard
    (- Dual-channel DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066)

Will this this ram work with it?

I was told it says 2400mhz but will only work at 1800 or 1333.

this memory just gave a black screen

They should all work, the only thing is it will always under clock to the highest speed your motherboard can handle.

I use a lot of asus ROG boards but havnt seen that one in particular.

Did some digging, it supports up to a max (at release) of 4 dimms and 8GB of 1800 memory.

How/where was the memory? 2x4 gb in slots b2 and a2?

What i would suggest is to clear your your bios settings to get rid of any bound timings for ram since the RoG boards have a ton of options. Try a single stick in slot a2, let it post, check its registering the correct amount of memery and power it off, try slot a2, then b2 ans b1 and verify all 4 channels work ok.

Then double check your manual. My new asus boards default slots were a2 and b2 for a pair of ram sticks, not 1 like most people would assume.

If you do get the 2 sticks to work, then go in and enable xmp which will allow your board to use the most compatible ram timings which in your case should be 1800.

To directly answer your queation, i do not think that 16GB kit will work in your machine. Unless asus did a firmware/bios update to support more than 8GB of memory. Or the model you gave is incorrect and theres a roman numeral like iii or vii missing.
