    Default Insurance Safety Inspection

Looking to sell a 2002 RAV4, but the car has the infamous P0420 code, indicating the catalytic converter is working inefficiently (and b/c of this car may be emitting more).

Is presence of the check engine light on, and error code re exhaust system problem, enough to fail the car for its inspection?

    Any thoughts appreciated!

Isnt insurance safety just tires/suspension/muffler/brakes/windshield/lights etc?

I think they just look at the general condition of the exhaust system make sure there's no rust holes etc

I had an insurance inspection done on a truck I sold about a year ago. The guy didn't even get inside the passenger's compartment and didn't see the CEL. He was focused on the steering, suspension, working lights, and general mechanical condition of wheel bearings, engine mounts, exhaust system, etc.

If the first guy won't pass it, try another. As G-ZUS linked, it's pretty basic and shouldn't cause you much grief.

Any safety inspection is the buyer's problem as it would be their insurance company requesting one if required, and sure a CEL might factor into the price they are willing to pay for it but shouldn't affect what the insurance companies have decided are safety systems.

I've had a couple of these inspections done before and I was told by the guy doing it on one occasion that they aren't even required to check that the car runs, just that it can steer and stop safely.

I've had them go both ways...

Some of the chains - demand OOP standards. Which is a joke - just upsell tactics (usually followed with a unsafe to drive - its not leaving our lot except on a tow truck). I had to get CPS involved in that one (was actually nothing wrong with the jeep; stupidly took to ctc because... Sunday...).

But its meant to be a quick "is it safe enough that I'd drive beside it on the road" inspection. My old Mechanic did little more than a lap of the block and a check of lights. (Albeit he'd throw it on the hoist if something didn't seem right)

You also have the guys who just take the cash and sign the piece of paper. Safety inspections can be a joke.

    Here's the form

    http://www.registriesdirect.ca/pdf/V...Inspection.pdf

They'll likely just do a visual inspection of the exhaust system, that's it

the check engine light does not fail an insurance inspection. I do them quite often at work. never once failed one for a CEL. the insurance inspection is just a general saftey inspection weather it is safe/fit to drive

I hope more insurance companies follow mine. I'm with Co operators and they don't require inspections. =)
