Default Selling a Canadian vehicle in the US

I'm curious to know the process the importers use to import a CDN vehicle into to the US? I would like to take advantage of the US/CDN exchange.

I have a 2015 Jeep SRT that I am contemplating selling in the US. I currently have the Jeep in AZ and wonder how much would be involved in selling the vehicle here? I don't think there is any duty to pay. Since it is a '15 all warranty work and service is up to date. US safety standards should be similar to CDN standards. I think there would be an emission test requirement.

US '15 Jeep SRT's go for about $60K down here.

I'm not 100% sure but judging by the reverse wouldn't all the import/duty be the responsibility of the buyer?

You might want to check into the warranty. I know that a new Chrysler vehicle bought and then imported into Canada has NO warranty coverage coming across the border - so the reverse might be applicable too.

That could be a major sticking point for a US buyer...unless you find a dummy who doesn't know what they're doing.

I sold a used car to a buyer in the US. It seemed straightforward enough:

-he had to get a letter of safety compliance from the manufacturer
-he wanted photos of the emissions sticker under the hood and in the doorjamb
-the speedo and odometer need to be in miles or else the buyer needs to swap clusters
-the buyer will need to pay taxes and duty (depending on where the car was made) at the border
-car needs to have a clean undercarriage to cross border
-buyer had to pay for 1 way flight here and one night at a motel
-buyer paid for dealer inspection of vehicle. I took it there beforehand, and he called them with his visa.

Really the toughest part as the seller is verifying funds from a US source.

Thnx for the offer, I may contact you if I decide to go that route.

-No problem getting a compliance letter
-emissions would have to be done in the state it would be purchased, AZ is about $100
-speedo in the SRT can be changed from mph to kph so no problem there
-my car is in AZ so I have a clean undercarriage
-I would sell it here locally so no additional travel costs
-The BIGGEST problem I see is the warranty. I will have to check to see if it would be transferable. I know the US to Canada warranty's are not transferrable
-YES, checking for the correct funds would be the major concern
-there is no duty since the vehicle is made in Canada
-still not sure if a sales tax would be payable(I know GST is payable bringing a vehicle into Canada). Does that mean a State tax is payable in reverse? 9.4% in AZ?

I'm not sure if anything has to be done at the border with respect to forms?

I'm almost positive that the Jeep would have to be brought back to the border and re-enter the US with all the proper import forms. So maybe take that into consideration as well.

I really question if this is just a scare tactic or not. Maybe it's brand specific but I owned an U.S. Trailblazer SS and had it serviced under warranty numerous times in Canada.

pretty sure that the jeep has to be marked as an "EXPORT" from Canada so heading south would further complicate things...

No - there is truth to it. Some manufacturers keep the warrant intact and others don't.

I recall a number of people that just decided to forego their warranty after they realized how much (at the time) they were saving buying in the US.

You'd have to transfer it at the border to them.....still the same story.

Then you must be terrible at it because there's already two threads on the same topic already.

Default Importing a vehicle to the USA

Has anyone ever imported a vehicle into the USA? I am going to be in California for 6 months so I was thinking about importing my truck to the US and selling it there since with the dollar difference I should be able to unload it quite easily.

I know the vehicle is identical between the US and Canada so as far as EPA regulations go that should be relatively painless.
