    Sorry to hear, eblend.

I know first hand what that felt like and I hope your mom bounces back ASAP!

I know we joke around, but this is real and it's hitting everyone.

It's alright, I will help as much as I can. I am luckily still employed (contractor in a non-oil and gas field) and they want to hire me full time, or so they say, so we will see. Left my cushy government job at the wrong time haha.

Cenovus Energy Inc. says it's planning to reduce its workforce further this year and take other moves to cut $400 million to $500 million from its costs while it rides out a rough period of low oil and gas prices.

Among other things, it's aiming to cut operating and administrative costs by $200 million, through unspecified workforce cuts and lower cash compensation for its five highest-paid executives.

Its revised capital budget has also been lowered to between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion, which is down $200 million to $300 million from the previous announcement. It's also 27 per cent less than 2015 and 59 per cent lower than 2014 levels.

There isn't 400 in that office. I'll reach out to who I know and see what's up.

Must be false. It was a word of mouth thing.

Suncor announced a rollback of all independent contractors' rates by 20%.

And it's right across the board, which is asinine because the lower paid contractors are going to get screwed. I've got two friends who are not making bank (under $50/hr) who are livid about it.

Better than losing your job, but 20% is a massive chunk of change to forfeit

If I took a 20% cut to my hourly rate, I'd start applying at McDonald's.

That's not terrible. Contractors at $50 would have to suffer with 83k instead of 104k.

Cut out a trip and eat in.

It's essentially what we took last year when things first started heading down the tubes. What it came down to was "take it or quit, someone else will work for it."

    You're assuming a 40 hour work week.

No doubt, but I'd sure rather be making 30/hr (62k) from 36/hr (74k) and still have a friggin' job, rather than go straight to goose-egg. Would they be 'livid' about not working anymore too? Sucks for sure and I'm glad I haven't seen any rollbacks yet, but it sure could be a lot worse right?

Tell you the truth, they are probably one of the last one to do it.

And again, I expect 80-90% of contractors will stay. And I assume contractors that were signed as part of a bigger contract won't be impacted.

Doesn't matter the work week, if you are a trade/contractor, you are probably on 2on/2off or 1on/1off.

There is a difference of maybe 100 hours between those shifts and a 40 hour work week.

So yes, $80k per year is definitely better than a kick in the ass. Hell, that would still be moving UP the payscale for me (not including OT I guess). Glass is half full?

True a 20% cut is better than getting let go outright. Now say when oil goes back $60 would it be justified for people to ask for increases? At $80?

Interesting the announcement came out Friday afternoon ahead of the Family Day long weekend.

We took up to a 50% cut in the directional drilling field.

As well as a 70% cut in hours

Anyone who's livid with a pay cut in this climate needs to give their head a shake and be glad they haven't been axed yet haha.
