Thanks. I thought I was in the clear, but I guess they started looking at where people live and where the work is, and there's nothing going on in southern Alberta. I knew it was a gamble but I really like to keep where I work and where I live separate for when I'm on days off.
The same thing happened in the last slow down. I was working for another mud company and living in Lethbridge. That time though I got tipped off that layoffs were coming for people that weren't living near any work, and moved back home to Swift Current before they could get me. I think the decision this time came from at least two levels above my boss' head, and it came too quick for me to find out about it.
I'm sure I'll be able to find something to fuck around at for a few months while I come up with a more long term plan, whether it's another mud company or something completely different.

HR/Accounting/Non-engineers were most of the layoffs in Calgary for Devon yesterday according to my buddy.
GM dealership, laid off a shop foreman earlier this week. My last day is tomorrow.

Yeah I'm saying one of our foreman was laid off but I had already quit, not that I lost my job.
I have another job lined up on March 1st.
That's how I interpreted it. Once I re-read it though I could see how you could have read it the other way.Originally posted by Twin_Cam_Turbo

Well, that didn't take long. They cleaned house in our Project Management team, only me and one other Project Engineer get to stick around for close-out, other ones are done today. All our disciplines have aggressive de-staffing plans, starting to release people this week.Originally posted by cjblair
My project got shelved last night. Probably lots (more) layoffs at my company - major EPC - and there has been more layoffs at Devon in Calgary, as of this AM.
They're trying to find another spot for me, instead of just unloading me (which is great), but it could result in me working out of town
Personally, I'm not worried about getting let go. Even if it does happen, I don't really have any bills to pay, already paid my golf membership dues for the year so I can just make the most of that. I feel terrible for some people though, our scheduler won't be around much longer and he's got twins due any day now - I can't imagine how stressful that would be
TH will probably not be layoff notice. CEO is in Houston for IHE conference (also he's meeting with OPEC - not if some or all members).Originally posted by suntan
There's a town hall meeting next week for Shell. Mandatory attendance.
Even if they announce layoffs, that's the start of their 90 day layoff process.
Encana just announced another 20% being cut. Plus they slashed their dividend.

Another re-org. The Head of Americas Upstream is retiring and they are moving his portfolio into other areas instead of replacing him. Interesting thing is that the Albian Mine is moving into Downstream while In-situ is moving into Global UpstreamOriginally posted by suntan

i imagine there will be a few more redundancies with this on top of the ones coming up from the BG buyout.
Conservative estimate is IT will lose ~70, not sure about other areas.Originally posted by sabad66

Albian being pushed to downstream means oilsand is as attractive as operating refineries. Shell is done with oilsand, it's just cheaper stock feed for Scotford.
Actually closer to 100 (staff) IT folks by the end of this year. 70 probably by August. We find out who is staying and who is going in April. Calgary IT market is going to be flooded if things don't pick up...Originally posted by Xtrema

That's crazy...
Within Alberta, my company is down probably closer to 65/70% since early 2013, and we're not a small company by any stretch. The numbers that ECA reported are probably pretty common across the sectorOriginally posted by pheoxs
