Yes, I like living in Alberta regardless of economic conditions
No, I would look for work/opportunities elsewhere
Undecided - location is not important to me
I do not currently live in Alberta

You arent gonna be able to afford that i8 on P/T hours!! What are you again? A drafter?Originally posted by Sugarphreak
Bump!
So anybody change thier mind about this? To either staying or leaving?
I am starting to lean towards leaving again. I am just getting by on part time hours, but financially it isn't great. I need things to get better and I can't see it happening anytime soon.
Same plan for me: Ride my job out until it ends then immediately look elsewhere (I'll apply local but don't expect anything)Originally posted by Sugarphreak

maybe pick up a second part time job somewhere...? I know lots of places hiring but it's not youre "i'm used to being paid O&G sector money" kind of jobs though. Unfortunately, that's what everyone's holding out for.
In my profession, unfortunately it's not exactly easy to just get up and leave. Each Province/Country has their own governing bodies so it's hard to move around. Wish I could, I'd move to California or something but ain't gonna happen.
That's regardless of the recession, I am not too concerned about that at the time being anyway. But in general would have been nice to have the choice to get up and go wherever whenever I wanted. Haha.
It's going to be a decade long recovery. Once we are cut to the bones and a couple more major acquisition and merger later this year, then I'll see the job loss trend to stabilize. We will coast like that until at least 2020 with no new capital flowing in.Originally posted by Sugarphreak

No new major projects/investments for the forseeable future. Distrust of a NDP government isn't helping either. But give it a year or two and see what happens. If oil can stabilize at $50 then you might see companies investing again given that prices are expected to be $80+ in the next decade.
I am not really sure what the best thing to do is.. My work is supposed to be doing more layoffs and I will probably survive the cut but then after that, when is the next cut. And all of our employees will be gone so it'll be long hours with no benefits other than a paycheck. So I guess I will ride it out and look for other jobs.
If I was to get laid off I would strongly consider moving to go back to school or to find work.
Sign of economy, 1st time in 4 years, not only I don't have to beg or book way ahead of time for a service loaner. I get to have my pick. That's dropping the car off without warning.
Wife's work is looking at another big cut next month sometime.
My contract ends in 5 weeks.
If she doesn't lose job and I find another opportunity then things stay the same.
or if she does lose her job and I find work then we just pull the kids from daycare and probably sell house and rent in Calgary, we would be still just scraping - we don't want to dip into our savings.
If we both can't find work then sell house and look outside of Alberta probably BC due to weather/hospitals/schooling.
Problem with her particular job is shes a chemical process / project engineer and there really only seems to be work for that in Alberta. Next to nothing in terms of chemical engineer jobs in BC.

Im presuming thats some sort of breaking bad reference
Is anyone else a process engineer out looking for work? how bad is it?

I would advise that those with specific degrees just apply in all sorts of positions that just need a degree. No way to tell what that position can turn into.
Nothing wrong with walking away from a specific career if that career is no longer tenable/viable (I've done this 2x before).
My brother in-law has been looking for work in his field (as a laid off mech eng) but did not broaden his search to other fields.
Spent the week looking at properties in the Vernon/Coldstream/Kelowna areas. We've officially decided to move there....we have a baby due in June so were staying here till at least Fall. Fingers crossed that Alberta real estate doesn't completely shit the bed in the next year.Originally posted by Sugarphreak

Hope you can find work there, Kelowna's the 2nd worst place in the country to find a job at the moment, in saying that I think calgary is 3rd worst.Originally posted by corsvette

In my area the people that are selling their houses are bumping the price by atleast 50k in order to create a "deal" for someone that lowballs them.
There's another reason for that. Dealerships have been pumping up sales numbers by buying service loaners on heavily subsidized leases through the manufacturer.Originally posted by Xtrema
