Depends what you do, they aren't bringing in expats anymore and those of us that rotate have been told there's a target on our backs. Enough people were laid off that there's no shortage of locals for positions above rig hands.

I don't plan to stick around. The world is a beautiful place and there are many places I would love to live and work for a while. What better time than a downturn to make that jump and explore living somewhere else.

That being said if I had a wife/kids I would stick around, but by myself now is the best time

It's not so much the weather but the work that would have me moving. I wanna see if I can survive in Seattle or Silicon Valley, but it's tough when you've got something decent going. Getting laid off would (maybe) be the kick I need to throw myself to the wolves.

Do you like it down there for work? I was thinking of heading down if things turn truly bad here. More on the project management/construction management side of things.

The local vs. expat thing isn't an issue, I have citizenship and can rustle up a local Aus address.

I accepted an offer in Vancouver last year, but ended up receiving an offer back here shortly after moving there. Calgary will always be home, but my fiance half joked that she wished she was getting laid off so that we could move there permanently, haha

She's aware, haha. Even in Surrey, Langley, and Maple Ridge the housing prices are atrocious for what you get.

When you're in a normal location, the scenery is unreal - think downtown Calgary in the summer but year round, and shorter skirts. You get used to the working lifestyle, it's a lot less hectic than Canada ever was. The tax difference will be negligible now and outside of Sydney / Melbourne your dollar for a house goes a lot further.

Dunno....I find the Valley areas on a par with Calgary. Surrey is "eww" though.

But Langley is nice, and on par with Calgary. Aldergrove and Abbotsford a little cheaper still. It's just the commute you have to deal with.

    Langley: 6 bedroom/4 bath with yard $539,000

Um, you mean the 3 hour daily commute? Dont forget the tolls now as well. The new bridge to replace the tunnel will also add 10$ daily to your drive, then add the price of gas in the Lower Mainland (taxed way more), ICBC (communist insurance, good drivers pay a huge bump for bad drivers), etc...... and you can see why its a city for millionaires only who can afford to live DT or close to it.
