Default Fuel Experts Help Me OUT!!

My car is bogging out, only when warmed up

I have a slight problem with my fuel system. I'll give you some hinters, and i'm open to all suggestions:

    Already tested/replaced:

    Spark Plugs
    Plug Wires
    Dist. cap and rotor
    Fuel Pump
    Fuel Filter

All are either OEM honda parts or have been tested by a certified mechanic (which doesn't mean shit these days, but he did confirm that the fuel pump is working perfect).

Yesterday, I hooked up my A/F gauge (autometer) to see if it would help me identify anything. I know that the results of this particular gauge are worthless at times, but I did notice something particularly interesting.

The light show is fine until the car starts bogging out. Then the gauge reads PURE richness. I mean the light goes all the way to the rich end.

Are there ANY suggestions as to what this might be? I am thinking ECU or o2 sensor, but i'm not really sure. The AF gauge has led me to believe that it is 100% a fuel problem. What would cause my car run extremely rich while bogging? It no longer has any serious modifications to it.

sounds like the ignitor. as soon as the distributer gets hot it starts flaking out. classic honda. the car runs rich when it bogs because there is no spark to burn the fuel. I have one. 1998. $175 if you wana buy it and try it.

Did you gap your spark plugs properly when you put them in?

Legendboy: It sounds like something isn't igniting the fuel. Here's another hinter i noticed today. If by chance I turn the car off when it's been bogging, and I try to turn it off in a few mins (say, if I go into a store for a few seconds or so), it won't start until I try it a couple of times (waiting a few mins between starts).

Is that ignitor you have new/used? If it doesn't work can I bring it to ya?

Definately the ignitor after what you describe. The longer you leave it, it will finally stop starting at all. The ignitor is used, from a 1998 b20b. If i sell it to you i really don't want it back...... you would get all your money back for it on ebay i'm sure. acuraautomotiveparts.org sells the little thing for $173usd and thats the cheapest place to buy anywhere.

I would think O2 sensor for these reasons:

    1) O2 sensor readings are not valid until the car is warmed up. The ECU ignores this input until it is warm, and runs on predetermined fuel maps in the meantime.

    2) The O2 sensor could be lying to the ECU, telling it is lean, when it is not. Therefore, the ECU dials up the fuel.

IF its an O2 or an igntion problem, it should be triggering a CEL. But, parameters within the ECU often leave alot to be desired. They only abide by the strictist letter of the law with regards to OBD requirements...

When the car is warm, and bogging, check your primary O2 voltage. IT should be pinned at 1 Volt. If it is not, the O2 is bad.

If the sensor is reading .5 volts, then the ECU will be oblivious to whats going on.

o2 would never cause a car to bog like that.....maybe if it wasn't hooked up. i'm still right. i know exactly what the problem is.........cause i've had this problem!!!!!!

My guess would try replacing ur fuel filter,

My friends b16 crx turboed was doing the simliar thing but was always on the lean, and even on full throttle would stay lean...

and once he replaced the fuel filter the A/F gauge went normal...

Huge difference between the two problems man. I can see a fuel filter preventing gas from getting through....but how would it make more gas flow if it was dirty?

You guys would NOT believe what this turned out to be...

    It was the radiator

I still can't figure out how or why, but apparently the radiator end tanks were spitting out coolant, so there was air in the system causing it to bog out. Unbelievable.

mmm must have been coolant spraying on your distributor/plug wires or something. nothing in the rad or coolant system to cause the engine to run poorly. hell, you can run a honda motor without any coolant and it still runs ok.
