Default What's up with the low fares recently?

I have been noticing a huge amount of increase in flight deals lately. Most of them are for overseas flights but even domestic flights have dropped a lot in the last 2-3 months. All while the USD is going up (I am under the impression that many airlines use USD as base currency to buy fuel etc).

Anyone know what's causing this? I'm asking to understand if this is a short term thing or I can expect this trend to continue. I want to travel in May and October but many of these deals are usually in Feb, March or April.

    Not THAT low...

Instead of passing on savings, the big carriers posted huge profits in the first and second quarters of this year. United Airlines' $1.2 billion profit in the second quarter of 2015 was the highest in company history.

Demand probably lower due to low CAD $. I know a few people who cancelled cruise reservations for this month, including myself.

    Few examples:
YYC - YYZ - $375; usually over $500 and up to $1000 at peak time
YYC - BOM - $920; usually over $1300 and up to $2000 at peak time
YYZ - IST - $650; usually over $1000 and up to $1500 at peak time.

These are all over 30% off if not more.

    Its many things.

Seasonal adjustment (cheaper after the holidays because less people travel now)

Fuel is significantly cheaper right now

Less people are travelling because of the Canadian dollar / economy so airlines reduce fares to entice more travel

What kind of birdhouse can you build with popsicles, roofies, and a rubber mallet?

Ended up being $410/person at Monte Carlo. All the usual mid-grade strip hotels were similar price. Only chose there as some friends were already staying there.

Looking at flights alone is expensive. WestJet Vacation discounts the flights big-time to sucker you into the hotel booking I guess.

Booked Vegas for easter last night. I think the whole trip flying out of Great Falls was 500 US for my girlfriend and I. Used some of her parents timeshare points and got 4 nights just off the strip for a whole $78 plus the guest/cleaning fees. $220 US or something for 4 nights?

My pockets hurt thinking about spending money there though. May skip the racing

I wonder how much cheaper flights to-from Alberta-East Coast have gotten over the last 6 months.

Westjets load numbers have been down, which is partially why their stock has been hammered so hard. I imagine they are trying to get that number back up as it seems that is a big thing people look at when investing in airlines (along with profits obviously)

They haven't, flying in Canada is still f*&king expensive

Fort Mac flights were down to $150 each way for a while.

    How much are they normally?

I just did a search for Feb 16-25 from YYC - Halifax and tax in it's $552 direct/return.

If fares get low enough, might take a trip down to Cali one last time before Trump institutes mandatory anal probe TSA agents at the border.
    Cocoa $11,000 per ton.
