its volunteering, you bring extra chips to the tables, trade people chips for cash in the cage, or count the cash from the tables in the count room, the casinos are legislated to have non profits volunteer for these jobs in exchange for a percentage of the table profits.

I would call it real wrestling, freestyle and Roman Greco to a lesser extent.

And you heard of what, amateur wrestling? Some clubs start as young as 5-6, most kids will get involved at a junior high level.

They're not charity tournaments, all competing athletes usually pay a fee to compete with volunteers running the tournaments, officials are paid. The non-profit I'm involved with supports four different clubs ranging in age from elementary to adults, some adults are in their 40's or older and still compete.

Anyhow, this is way off topic and I'd like to hear what other types of groups are out there that beyonders are working casinos for. Possibly some networking could help different groups our, our society just got a $10,000 grant for some Calgary tourism booster organization just by agreeing to put our hotel requirements out for bid for the upcoming Canadian cadet/juvenile wrestling championships which were are hosting at the U of C this spring. That $10,000 was an unexpected surprise and will most likely be used to further the sport of amateur wrestling in the city of Calgary through new equipment purchases (mats, timers, scales, etc) and repurposing older equipment to schools that may be in need.

The count room on a Sunday night is probably one of the easiest things ever. We finished our count room stuff before the guys in the cage.
Cage and chip runners are the latest evening/night shifts because the runners now have to assist in shutting down tables which is 3AM and the cage has to be open for patrons to cash out.

If you're going to work count room, avoid being the box opener because the keys can be a bitch sometimes and it's the dirtiest job by far.

I am impressed that there is a non-profit motorsports group (AMRA) that figured out how to make the casinos work for them, I hadn't actually heard of a motorsports group doing this as of yet.

So if they can do it, are there other motorsports groups out there like that - I see that the CKRC is a non-profit as well, I wonder if they have casino dates?

From what I've been told by our Treasurer, the AGLC has a long list of applicants for casino nights.

Yupp, could take up to 2 years to get casino dates and that's a long time for a new non-profit to exist on other types of fundraising - know this because the non-profit that my wife is somewhat involved with in the adult figure skating community is almost at the point of finally getting their first casino and up until this point they have pretty much relied upon monies from another non-profit to keep themselves going - that first casino, which should net them in the neighbourhood of $65,000, will go a long way in growing that amateur sport in Calgary as compared to what they've been able to do to date.

So selling cookies and such is on top of doing the casino volunteering?

Was volunteering at Ace Casino airport this week as a chip runner. Supporting my nieces school. Apparently that's the hot spot in the north. I'd better learn baccarat if I'm going to keep up.

Scheduled to be at Pure Casino Barlow Jan 17 and 18 supporting my kids school.

Still say that casino volunteering is the best way to support any charity. Usually kinda fun too.

The funds we receive from these events allows us to reduce the amount of fundraising that we do annually to pay for field trips, technology and in school experiences that are typically not funded by the CBE.

For these events, we are required to have a total of 40 positions staffed with volunteers between the two days (18 positions and 2 backups per day). Some people volunteer for one shift, some people don't mind doing two.

There are three shifts per day. The day shift runs from 11:00AM to 7:15PM, the night shift runs from 7:00PM to 3:45AM and the courtroom runs from 11:00PM to 3:45AM. Each shift takes 6 volunteers to man, we have an advisor in the cash cage and another in the count room who will teach you how to do the position that you sign up for, a meal is provided and the proceeds we receive the following quarter allows us to better support the school.
This description explains it pretty well. Casino volunteering is great, y'all should try it.

I know some people enjoy it but id rather get kicked in the dick than volunteer at the casino. I'm not looking forward to all the requests now that my kids are in school and sports

Seriously. "We're desperate for volunteers!1!! We might need to cancel this years event!" Then you look at the volunteer schedule and it's 10pm to 4am shifts on a Wednesday... like no shit you can't find anyone to help, aside from childless loners and unemployable alcoholics, who the fuck can work those shifts?

At least it's good $/hr. About $170/hr for each volunteer last time I checked. (around sixty grand, and 350 hours, including the organizing time.) damned bake sales, bottle drives etc are like $20/hr.

It is getting harder to bounce back from a 4am than it used to be though.

Plus, each charity only gets one every 18 months or so.

I mean when you think of the demographics of people who would attend one of these “casinos”…

For $170 an hour I don’t get it, can’t they find real employees to work these?

The whole setup makes 0 sense.

Some workplaces give volunteer days. Technically one could do the night shift and have the following day off in Lieu. I did that last time I volunteered.
You get free dinner and non alcoholic drinks.
But yeah Casino nights generate a lot of money if not the bulk of what non profits and community associations can get.

It is bizarre how Casinos in Alberta operate. It's some kind of very socialist government intervention that aside from the Indian casinos, all the rest of them are technically "charity casinos" every day of the year. The cash cage and count room are run by volunteers every time, all day, every day.

I'm not saying it's sensible, or that I'd start from scratch and create this system. But if you like to volunteer for any charity, this is the highest $/hr way to do that.

It's probably part of the reason we have so many casinos for a city of this size.

I've always had a fun experience doing it, but I know my idea of fun and interesting is often different from other people's.

EDIT: And just to note, at least non-profits benefit from the way casinos bone their customers.

I volunteered a couple years ago and really enjoyed it. Our volunteer day landed on a -40C day so some of the volunteers bailed and I ended up doing two jobs. Between the temperature and the pandemic, it was a pretty slow day so we took turns going out to start our cars every couple of hours haha. I was looking forward to doing it again for our organization this summer, but it landed on the day I was heading out of town so I missed out.
