    Default Casino volunteering

So here I sit in the volunteer room at Calgary Casino volunteering as a chip runner tonight for a non-profit amateur wrestling group in Calgary and I started wondering how many beyond members are involved with groups that utilize casinos as a part of their fund raising?

Over the past 19+ years, I have lost track of how many casinos our family have volunteered at and the different non-profit groups - as best as I can remember it's been at least 9 or 10 different non-profits. Usually in the count room but tonight was the first time as a chip runner in probably 15 years, my favourite casino to volunteer at is Calgary Casino, have also volunteered at Cash Casino, Century (old Silver Dollar), Deerfoot and Elbow River.

So are there any other beyond members who do the casino/non-profit volunteer thing?

I've done it 3 times for the AMRA. Was always in the count room and it's been fun every time.

Casino volunteering is my favorite type. So many other fundraisers are poorly organized and make very little money. Casino always makes good coin and runs flawlessly.
Have done count room and chip runner.

    TLDR: A+, would do again.

Werd. Bake sales get progressively worse with the "nut free" "dairy free" "gluten free" "egg free"... like how many things can one person be allergic to!

On topic: I've never done a casino... maybe I'm just not at that age yet where people come up with doing those.

I voted no however my daycare requires me to do this on the 1st of April, I signed up as a chip runner too, I have no idea what that position entails. I have a shift of 11.30am - 7pm, really hoping the time flies by as I really like playing slot machines and frankly I cant imagine anything more boring than being in a casino and not being allowed to play slots.

I wasn't of age at the time, but I was involved in a non profit group that tried to build a track in Fort Macleod. The group did a bunch of casino volunteers... then randomly it was decided that we weren't elibigible for that sort of fund raising because we weren't seen as a true charity.

In the end they tried to force the group to pay back the large sum of money we fund raised through the casino. It ended up becoming a big deal and I forget what the actual end result was, believe it got paid back but not 100% sure? It was a shitty deal since I think we had already used a good chunk of money to buy land.

One of the easiest things you'll ever have to volunteer for. Shitty hours aside, time goes by very quickly and you can basically sit there and eat the whole time. Especially as a chip runner, you only do work as needed, so the rest of the time you're sitting in the volunteer room watching tv.

Your daycare? I don't handle that part for my organization, but I was under the impression the organization has to be a registered non-profit in order to be eligible for casino nights.

For those that are interested, the document at this link provides a lot of details with respect to what casino (gaming) proceeds can or can not be used for.

my parents do this several times a week, they perfer the count room, but it gets them out of the house, gives them a decent dinner for free, and a bit of exercise while they're at it, they really enjoy it for the most part.. most of the time they don't even know who they are volunteering for, organisations just pass their number around and get get random calls whenever they are short people.

I've gone quite a few times to help, once every couple months i'll get a call because one of my parents cant make it and the other would like some company, i dont mind, it makes for late nights, but you can usually catch a nap in the volunteer room if you need it.

some organisations even give extra perks, when my son was in bowling, we'd do it for the bowling association and as a thanks they'd knock off part of his fees, had my whole family do it one year and it was free for him to bowl the entire year, other times we've received gift cards, usually minor, $25 for the bay one time, it was nice because my wife and parents were there, and my parents dont shop at the bay so they gave theirs to me, decent discount on a suit

I usually do this ~ 3 times a year for the various senior Chinese associations. I'm always, and much prefer, doing the count room. You just need to do it twice at night at very specific time points, instead of waiting around as a chip runner. The seniors are also not very good with computers and slow with sorting money, so I feel like I add alot of value by helping them out in the count room.

The downside to count room is you don't start til 10pm and doesn't end til 230am. It is difficult when it falls on a weekday, where I wouldn't get home until after 3am, just to get up at 7am for work. It's tough to do that 2 days in a row.

With that said, I really enjoy doing it and will continue to help for as long as I can. Elbow casino is my favorite because I can order a beef brisket noodle soup in between, and it's close enough to home that I can actually go back between counts. I also love watching people play craps too. Plus that place is busy so lots of money to count. Cowboy on weekdays is soooo slow.

I've done the volunteering at the casino previously, i was a chip runner as well and for junior wrestling - UofC Junior Dinos.

I'd be cool with doing it again, same with my wife, we're both huge supporters of amateur wrestling. The prob thou is my boy is no longer junior and he quit wresting, so i thought it would be weird to volunteer when you don't have a kid in the organization anymore.

Yeah well I wonder how they get the soft flowing caramel inside the Caramilk bar but you don't see me making a god damn thread about it. Slap your wife Baygirl, straighten him out.

I have done it 3 or 4 times. Raises a lot of money for the sponsoring organization. Not much to do as a chip runner.

After delivering $500 chips to one table, I spent some time watching the guy play. Burned through thousands of dollars. After he left I asked the supervisor about him. He told me the player is a regular and is up or down between 10K and 30K most nights.

Aye, and it is a registered non profit.

Our daycare is basically saying to us - volunteer or else we will introduce a fee on everyone that doesnt volunteer, which is brutal because I busted my ass last year selling fucking cookies and then cookie dough and these other things.

We do this every 1.5-2 years or so with our cycling team as a fundraiser. Helps pay for our juniors' coaching i believe and also putting on events (though they are usually well attended and sometimes turn a profit). I've done it twice now - both times in the count room.

I've done it a handful of times and I prefer being in the cage. Chip runner is boring as hell as you can end up sitting for quite a while without needing to go out. The count room was good too.

I prefer the cage too. For me, it's a good opportunity to get to talk to the parents of players within our organization, and get to know them outside noisy and busy environment of a basketball gym.

The count room on a Sunday night is probably one of the easiest things ever. We finished our count room stuff before the guys in the cage.

Nah, its only weird if you want it to be. My kids are not wrestling any more either and I still stay involved, helping run tournaments, volunteering a casinos and other fundraisers plus still sitting on one of the local wrestling non-profit.

Last night we had past Olympian medalists, future Olympians (Rio), U of C Dino wrestlers plus parents who haven't had kids in any wrestling program for 6+ years volunteering - all of them there because they are still supporting something important to them.

Is that real wrestling, or the entertainment type?

I've never heard of any of these before, I feel so uninformed. Are these charity tournaments with volunteers or something?
