Default Toyota Kills Off Scion as a brand

    http://jalopnik.com/is-toyota-going-...day-1756800336

    rebranded back into Toyota.

At a top-secret meeting this afternoon, employees were told that the division, which started with the xA and xB in 2002 as 2003 models, wouldn’t see it’s 14thanniversary. Those who were laid off were told they would need to reapply for other jobs at Toyota, which also means moving to Texas. A formal announcement will be made tomorrow morning at 9 am.

No surprise. The had limited models and no crossovers/SUV's. in todays market that will = failure.

Yeah, and the fact that FR-S owners were buying toyota badges to 'fix' the scion branding is pretty sad.

That happens with most JDM brands. Not just Toyota / Scion

Didn't see this coming but it makes lots of sense. I am also assuming there would have been dumb people who thought they had nothing to do with toyota.

Kill kB, rename FR-S to GT86, iM to matrix. Not sure what they would do with the TC though, toyota has no sporty FWD vehicle currently so it might make sense to keep this. iM would also be pretty interesting if it had the tc engine instead of corolla engine.

I think making a sporty Corolla like the Civic Si is their best bet. Ditch the tC altogether.

Finally - I'm surprised this wasn't done years ago.

Always seemed silly to me. Ugly vehicles for the most part and if Toyota really wants to sell them, just badge them Toyota. It is about time.

The Matrix was already discontinued in 2014 to make way for the iM. TC has also been discontinued

I suppose that would make the most sense. Don't know what the sales are like on the tc but I am assuming it isn't too high. Now they need a turbo engine also. iM seems to be a pretty decent car besides the engine.

I'd be curious to see how many base Civic owners end up getting Si's. I feel like every teenager who had a car ended up falling in love with whatever the sportiest version of their car was. Having a TRD Corolla feels like a win/win. Name recognition, brand loyalty, and can you imagine the article we'd write if it were actually a good car?

That is true, especially with the number of sis and similar vehicles you see on the road. I suppose the current corolla would look and feel more sporty than the past ones with a proper engine/suspension/brakes also. With the last XRS, it had 170hp under the hood, but in the looks department, gluing on additional trim to the bumpers really doesn't help it look sporty.

The fact the Scion buyers are all retirees anyway (other than GT86), their mission failed.

You are on a roll with your posts today. Again, I came to post exactly this. Scion was a failure, both in their demographic targets and reason for existing.

Toyota could have just had all of these brands and people would have been cool with it. The amount of money wasted must have been infinitely higher than having a single car-model line fail in your regular brand. Hence why Pontiac went the way of the dodo.
