Call teachers overpaid and lazy because they are unionized but we just saw a page full of useless posts from people sitting at work really earning their pay.

What makes you think I'm at work?

And even if I am, do you work every single second you're there?

I wasn't singling you out with my post. Just making a general comment. No need to be offended by my comment. You are most likely a model employee like the rest of us.

Figured I'd bump an old thread rather than starting a new one.

Alberta teachers are working an average of 48 hours a week, according to study data released Friday.

“This confirms what Albertans already know, that teachers are professionals who dedicate their time and energy to our future generations. This survey will help inform discussions with education partners as we move forward,” said Alberta Minister of Education David Eggen.

The study, which was done in co-operation with the provincial government, the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Alberta School Boards Association, asked 3,374 teachers, 357 administrators and 173 office staff to complete online surveys about the time they spend doing specific tasks throughout their days.

Most of the teachers’ time — 59 per cent — was spent instructing students with 22 per cent dedicated to planning and preparing for instruction.

The survey, which cost the Government of Alberta about $500,000 and took roughly 44 weeks between September and June, also shone a light on some of the preparatory work teachers do during the summer months.
Considering how much every teacher I know over bloats just how hard they work, I'm surprised the number didn't surpass 60+ hour weeks. What a waste of money!

I'd say 48 hours would be on the low end. I think if you did the same survey with university professors, you'd likely see the 60 hours a week, likely more including research.

Married to a teacher and I see the hours put in outside of the hours spent at school. I'm not saying every teacher puts in the extra hours but I'm hoping its more then just my wife.

Teachers definitely don't work as hard as O&G engineers.

44 hours a week on average for the year?

or 44 hours a week during school-in weeks?

^ I'm almost certain that would be during weeks while schools in...so cut out at least 12 weeks. That's 1,920 hours per year. A 40 hour per week office job (bare minimum) with 3 weeks gets you 1,960 hours and I would venture to guess at least half of professionals work more then 40 hours per week. That means even the laziest office worker puts in a weeks more time then the average teacher haha.

I also don't believe these numbers one bit as most teachers inflate how much they work. Are they including their 1 spare per day into work time? Including their lunch hour? Commute time? Volunteer time such as sports (this shouldn't be included as work hours).

As someone who lives with a 15+ year veteran school teacher, I can tell you that a lot of them push well into the 55-60 hour per week range during the school year. I'm not making stuff up for no reason at all, it's just the honest truth. There are definitely some teachers near retirement that are just marching in place and pull 35 hours a week, but what industry doesn't have people like that.

One of the families we hang out with teaches in our our community and I can tell you that when I go for my nightly walk, she's back at the school three or four nights a week from sometime after dinner until at least 10 PM (when I stroll by).

Hate if you want, it's just the truth.

The whole concept of our educational system is half assed backwards on every level.

From the actual teaching level, it's great at about the kindergarten level when you learn to socialize, work together, and have fun learning to read, write, add, subtract. Most of the rest is a combination of propaganda, useless facts, biased history, etc, and most importantly, a complete lack of critical thought.

I could go on and on about all that, but I'll stick my neck out even further and claim that most so called "teachers" are highly over rated, and highly over paid.

Well, now that I've said that, I might as well go all the way. That is, up until the age of 18, our education system (not the worst though), is just glorified baby sitting with a touch of fear induced obedience.
