Looking to upgrade my wifi during black friday, anyone know of any potential deals? I'd rather not require a device that needs to be licensed
In many cases, a single great router will do all you want.
Asus rt-ac5300 is pretty sick for range speed features etc. Haven't yet seen if it will go on sale, but if it does I may purchase.

I don’t feel like running vlans in my house to move my router from my basement, rather keep it there and then put in APs

Ubiquity’s consumer line Amplifi just launched their first Wifi6 product if that tickles anyone’s fancy. 7.7Gbps theoretical throughout and double the coverage of amplifi HD.

    Cool product.

Hopefully see that on the enterprise Unifi side soon.

Bought it the year it came out and it has been rock solid. Highly recommend the ac5300

I have an extra set of the 3 pack velop (ac 6600 version, the good one) that I could let go for $250 if someone was interested. I bought 2 kits thinking I would need 6 to cover my house and after 2 months I noticed that it was major overkill.

    Tempting, how's the throughput?

It depends upon your network speed of course by here a quick snippet.

I got the Velop because of the tri-band and the device handling. No smart home issues and I’m able to stream 4K UHD flies from my Plex server with zero worries to 3 TVs including 2 being wireless.

Here an example when I was on dual wan.

GT-AC5300, which is the "higher-end" version of the RT5300 is on sale at BestBuy for BF for $299, which is a pretty good deal.

I'm sure I saw the RT-AC86U for $179, although I can't find it now. Both are good deals.

Asus announced their Zen Mesh routers recently, and they look like they are going to be the way to go for a lot of users because unlike some other mesh systems, it will broadcast simultaneous 2.4/5 Ghz bands with separate SSID's while also having a dedicated backhaul. There is also an AX (WiFi6) version. I'm going to try it when it's out and see if it can beat my R7000, if so, I plan on switching to mesh.

It was in the "early black friday area" on BestBuy, if anyone was looking.

Cant recommend the GT-AC5300, I tried it and found the firmware to be very buggy.
This was when it was first released so it may have been fixed. If Asus merlin is a selling feature that model isn't supported either

I found the same, but only with smart devices....Throughput and range were great.

The RT-AC86U is a great deal, that is great router.

Most of those giant alien-looking routers end up being rather disappointing when objective testing is done, but that one is actually pretty good - just behind the all time champ Netgear R7800/XR500:

I found range and throughput to be about the same. I was after all the extra horse power via the CPU
3x the openVPN bandwidth and it does AES-NI, big selling feature for me

After hemming and hawing over Unifi for a while, I'm gonna try a TP-Link mesh with 2 EAP245 V3 access points and the omada cloud controller. Anyone used this before?
Access points are $100 at Staples ($75 after coupon) and the cloud controller is $86 on Amazon, so I should be up and running for under $250.

    @suntan
If this is anywhere above 300Mbps I would be satisfied
    I'm getting 112 MB/s transferring a 5GB file, so 896 Mbps.

The code was 65957 for $25 off purchases of $75 or more, but looks like it's not valid anymore.
You could try 65548 for 10% off... not as good savings though

Thanks. I ended up going with Unifi.

If anyone is interested, Memory Express has the UniFi UAP-AC-LR on sale for $119.99: https://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX65271

UniFi is so much fun if you are a nerd. Otherwise the new mesh systems are pretty great.
