Hi there. Excellent write up. I have an Ethernet hardware connection out there, but obviously phones and iPads stay connected to the router in the house, and having another AP in the garage I'm still faced with the problem of disconnecting. Now I might look into some of these solutions. Hope that will help me and people with similar problem.

There are a number of check box settings that can cause issues with cheap radios even if you use 2.4 only.

Fast roam, certain channels, 802.11b support etc.

My wife’s aunt had some $50 cheap android tablet that refused to play nice with my UniFi stuff. Their loss.

On a similar topic. What is everyone’s opinions on MOCA these days? I don’t be using cable but I have coax strung throughout the house. Wondering if using it as an internet hardline until I get network cables run is a good solution?

Does anyone make, for lack of a better word, a MOCA switch? Like one device that can feed signals to 4-5 MOCA receivers around the house?

I feel like it has to be better than a repeater mesh setup?
You can consider each MOCA line to be an ethernet cable, so just end them all at a switch.

They work really well, about 700mbps but a little bit of lag (internal network should be zero but conversion takes a teensy bit of time).

I setup a house using moca 2.5 adapters. Works well, minimal lag, full gigabit speeds. Way easier than wiring Ethernet in an old house. Just some random units on amazon.

First house I did wasted a ton of time. Only getting 10mbps. Turns out it starts slow and negotiates up. Just need patience (30 mins) before it hits full speed haha.
Aren't these like $200/set? It's not much more to get ethernet runs.

Cutting through walls over 2 floors definitely more than $200.

Has anyone had any issues getting IoT devices to work? I got this stupid water softener that's wifi connected, but uses some older Esspressif chip that apparently only works on 2.4ghz. So I set it up on a 2.4ghz only SSID and it still doesn't work.
I have a metric shit-ton of Espressive ESP8266 devices on my WiFi. No issues at all.

Maybe @gpomp just meant, run the cables externally throughout the house...........

I’d like to run cables everywhere sure. I just don’t know when I will get to it.

Telus did everything with MOCA for their setup which I will need to tear out and replace with mine but that can be a problem for another day.

I’m also debating running Lutron’s new RadioRA3 that just released. Trying to decide how much I care about automation.

I had 4-5 put into my 90s house for ~$250 each. Fully developed basement, etc.

I have a couple vacuflow outlets that seem like low hanging fruit for running cable. That’s probably where I will start for Wi-Fi AP’s.

Doesn’t help me get hard drops to the 5-6 places I will need them.

My brother is an electrician, him and I just wired a house together with 26 runs. It’s still a PIA even when you know what you are doing. A lot of $ of time fucking around with fishes.

There's your problem right there, you're supposed to run cable, not fishes.

Does anyone have a lead on a Dream Machine SE? Willing to pay secondary market prices too. Been checking a few times a day for a couple of weeks and not seeing much stock on them in Canada or the US.

Just check everyday around 12-2pm. That's when the restock happens. login and put on an alert. The stock alert will email you for some other product, but just go in a check right away.

For me, buying from ui direct is the best option because you get 2 years of warranty, 3 if you CC will extend by 1 year.

Was able to pick up a UDM-SE from the US today and sent it to my "Montana" address.

Has there been any news whether UI is developing the next version of the UDM? Perhaps UDM 2.0?

I mean they have the SE?

UniFi is pretty slow to roll out new products and very tight lipped.

They can barely keep the shelves stocked with their current products so I can’t imagine new products are that high on the priority list.

Yeah I am debating whether to go with the SE or wait for something new.
