    Default Synthetic oil and road trip

    Hey guys, making a 5500km road trip at the end of March. about 80% highway driving.

    Currently I have 2500km since my last oil change (royal purple)

    I am kind of anal about fresh oil, so would you change the oil before a roadtrip like this? or am I ok with since its synthetic?

    thanks

    Long distance driving is actually less damaging than short city trips, as the moisture gets burned off more efficiently, and there are proportionately fewer cold starts. I would have no issues waiting until I got back.

    On a side note, why are you using synthetic if you are doing such short oil change intervals? You don't say what car this is for, but in most applications, synthetic should be good for 10,000km or more without breaking a sweat.

    thanks,

    its an 09 lancer (non turbo)

    I just started using synthetic oil so I'm not used to the long intervals. Just trying to get some opinions on going for that long before changing.

    I am used to the 5000km change interval.

    I definitely wouldn't worry about it.

    Mileage is low enough not to worry however seeing you are using RP I would change my oil if only for piece of mind as it's not the greatest oil for overly long intervals and a pretty average performer for a supposed premium oil;

    You will get better performance from a widely available oil such as Pennzoil Platinum.

    5000km change interval on synthetic? Why bother? That engine isn't known to be a sludge monster, you should be fine tripling that interval unless you really drive the crap out of it.

    Go over to the bob is the oil guy forums and look for UOA reports for your car, and see what intervals other people are running.

    Long term, you need to get yourself comfortable with a longger interval, or cheaper oil, or maybe both.

    People talk about oil changes being "cheap insurance", but really, change royal purple every 5000km is neither cheap, or truly any kind of "insurance".

    Best of luck on your trip.
