    Their OS makes zero revenue.

Their phones I would wager are a net negative.

Their cloud services are in general total garbage. Amazon and MS are light years ahead. It's so bad there's a good chance Alphabet will shut it down.
Their OS and phones enable their revenue.

You mean selling your data to people who want to sell you things?

I believe the phrase you are looking for is "targeted advertising"

I decided to grab a Nest generation 4 thermostat, since they are down to $130 at Home Depot. I didn’t read up on them at all, just needed a replacement stat for my detached garage. The Nest app will not work with the new stat either, so had to start using the brutal Google Home app. Just a heads up for anybody considering these new pieces that will be sold in the dollar bins soon. (I still like my Gen 3 Nest in my house)
I made the same mistake, the Nest is not even worth $130 IMO. Between the brutal Google Home app and the Nest reading 4-5 degrees high I just swapped it out for an ecobee.

They need phones for ad revenue?

There's a reason why Google makes such few phones directly. They offload the risk to other companies. At least they got that part sorta right.

I think they feel a need to drive the hardware side to some degree.

Pixels were needed to drive a base standard for software update timing as well as implementation of android features. Pre Pixel/Nexus nobody updated their phones. They really needed to drive updates by setting a minimum standard with vanilla android to force guys like Samsung to actually update the software and not leave it stagnant post launch. Then there's functionality that android creates, and guys like Samsung not using it and building their own feature, making the experience inconsistent.

Has nothing to do driving revenue or anything, or driving hardware. It's purely to get android manufactures to not be idiots and hold them to a standard.

But broadly speaking, there is a business advantage to that.

Yeah it's basically a reference implementation.
