Default 50mm, which one? - updated

What 50mm would you pick for canon application (6d)?
(Mostly do automotive, but try other topics too)

I'm not terribly happy with my canon 1.4, I find af to be inconsistent.
I'm also not really wanting to pay for the 1.2 at this time.

I've been considering the sigma art 1.4...I keep reading mixed reviews from the "holy grail" next to the Zeiss, all the way to a definitive no. Seems like there can be bad copies and possible af issues too?

Or should I just work with the canon 1.8 and invest in additional glass at this time. (I really really liked my friends 135 F2L, can be difficult to frame due to length though. Looking at other lenses too.)

Found this old thread on the old sigma with mixed reactions:

1.8 is the bomb. Best bang for your buck ever.

As a Sigma 50mm 1.4 ART owner, I can say that a +3 focus adjustment was required and I have the dock already so I changed it for various focal distances. At 1.4 it's pretty sharp but does have slight glow to it, which goes away at f/2. To me it's minor because the overall picture still looks pretty damn sharp and the bokeh is fantastic.

Here's a couple test shots I did around the house, in-camera jpgs:

The only other lens I would consider potentially replacing it with would be the Zeiss 50mm makro planar. But for now this lens definitely will be hanging around as I really like it.

On the Canon side of lenses I can't really help as I don't have experience. The Nikon side has a 50mm 1.8 as well and it's fantastic. These nifty fifty 1.8 lenses have always been a ridiculous bargain.

I've heard the new canon stm nifty fifty is a nice step up from the old unit, but I would save for a sigma art, those lenses are crazy nice.

A used Canon 50mm 1.2 would be about the same cost as a new Sigma ART. That would be my choice.

    That's a big drop, no?
    1.2 is like 1950 now.
    Sigma is 1200

I've never seen a 1.2 in lethbridge, a couple in Calgary but still expensive.

I'm not sure I could buy that expensive of a lens without seeing it and testing it.

My next question is, why would someone sell a 1.2?

had the old sigma 1.4 non-art before too but for a nikon and loved it. they're pretty cheap now so I'd give it a shot before you drop big money on the other ones.

Totally forgot about the non-art version! Sold it and missed a 50mm prime so got the ART. Great lens overall. Only nit pick is really bad CA wide open but that's easily correctable.

The Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art is an amazing lens. Except for the size!

I had my heart set on getting one but then settled for the Canon 35mm F2 IS. I already had a Canon 50 1.4 so meh. I don't even touch my 50 anymore heh.

There's an old sigma in crowsnest for cheap, but the seller won't reply.
Maybe I should try a mail rental on the sigma art.

Call The Camera Store or Vistek first. I don't think they actually list everything online that they do rent, or are very slow on doing so.

This link seems up your alley:

I don't shoot 50mm often, but I am very happy with my 1.8 nifty fifty plastic fantastic. Good colour, contrast and sharp enough for me,
Ok sometimes the OOF highlights show the aperture blades, but I'm not a bokeh fanatic.

    Update:

    The Sigma was stolen property.

After I bought the lens I was thinking back and something didn't seem right during the sale. That night I did a search on CPIC and it came up stolen. Contacted police right away. Got my neighbor to do the report in the morning. Was able to give him enough good info and he got the guy shortly afterwards and the guy admitted it.

So now I'm out a lens and a bunch of money. It would be nice to get something back, but money is money I guess. I hope there's some sort of consequence for the guy and the actual owner has the opportunity to get it back.

Really turned off my trust. Really the worst possible time for shit like this to happen to me, life just keeps kicking you while you're down.
I don't think I'll be able to buy used gear again... maybe if it has all the packaging and receipt.

Anyways I still wanted something that I could use similarly to a 50mm, but something I would keep if I got back into a 50mm (either money returned to me or possibly the lens returned to me). So I decided on the 40mm F2.8. Really like it so far! Love the length, I think It'll be the perfect car show lens. Its super tiny and light too
