Oh fucking please man. You bitch about how your daddy had some problem about one single geologist and that having a designation could help with sorting out the legitimate ones.

Designation doesn't mean shit for most geologists here in Alberta. It doesn't equate to competency and it doesn't hinder you from getting corporate insurance if you don't have it. I know P. Geols who are fucking morons and also guys without their designation running fully insured consulting businesses as geologists.

APEGA enforces, companies want it. That's really the only reason anyone wants their P. Geo. Not because it allows you do to anything career advancing.

Well no kidding, because if you had a pulse you'd be onsite for $1800/day up until a year or so ago

But the reality of it is, the legal title forces liability onto the individual, which is a HUGE deal for a company. That's what its all about, end of discussion. There are SERIOUS repercussions if you are negligent in your duties, which typically doesn't occur with a lot of other professions. Due to the massive scale at which geos/engs can seriously cock stuff up, the onus is put on them to know their field of work.

I know a LOT of stupid engineers, and I still have a small amount of respect even for the idiots because they made it through the program. You must have the slightest idea of how to follow engineering practices/principles to get through it.

Unlike in the US where anyone can call themselves an engineer lol.

If apega didn't regulate engineers then the government would. To me this is the lesser evil. Same with every other professional organization.

You can't honestly say you would be ok with someone a degree from the medical school of Baghdad performing emergency surgery on you?

I'm not saying all of society would break down if professional organizations were disbanded, nor am I saying that everything or even most of what they do is useful. But to say that they have no place in our society is a fairly ignorant statement, likely drawn from your taking for granted quite how good things really are in our country.

Also your not being invited into the club totally has nothing to do with it

The wording does kind of read like a scare tactic. If you read it at face value you're left thinking nobody but a P.Eng can use the title "Engineer", I think that's entirely by design. However if you really bother to read it and interpret it I'm not sure that's the case. Certainly nobody but a P.Eng can use the P.Eng designation, but provided your additional descriptor (Technologist etc) doesnt leave any ambiguity as to whether you're a P.Eng or not you're okay.

It is no different than an engineer who let's gives up his membership with APEGA. It doesn't mean he suddenly isn't an engineer anymore, or a professional of some kind for that matter... he just isn't a "professional engineer". APEGA doesn't have the power to take away someones degree just because they don't pay dues to them.

In reality, associations like APEGA shouldn't even exist in the free market. The government shouldn't be enforcing that engineers need to be a member of some 3rd party lobbyist group just to practice their trade. Engineers should be hired on reputation alone, and not some bull shit membership that really does not qualify them anymore than they already are. IMO the only thing associations like APEGA do is act as middle men for collecting money, and a hindrance to qualified engineers. Same goes for virtually all of these 3rd party associations for doctors, or lawyers, or whatever. If you study and get your degree, you should be allowed to practice right out of the box.

APEGA is crucial from a discipline standpoint.
