Is this tied to the big news they had 2 weeks ago, something like 14000 people which subsequently pared down to lower number?
Had always thought Cisco as stable and growing "IT" segment.

It seems every where I've been that this is the way it works for professionals. Unless you change "job titles" within the company, or move to a different company, they rarely get an actual raise.

Cisco had been in trouble for years because they could not fight Huawei in many markets or segments. Especially growth market like China.

Many small companies can't afford Cisco and will make do with other brands. On top of all cloud based hosting, the infrastructure spending of most companies has been shrinking.

Everybody is hit, capital spending on server/storage/network are all lowering and favoring cloud based solutions and just a monthly opex bill.

yeah Cisco isn't seeing growth in their hardware sector as much and are trying to break into other areas and push SDN, cloud DC and their hosted collaboration offerings (with Spark, WebEx, HCS). Apparently it's around 5500 people globally, with it mostly being in the hardware business and 'struggling' sectors. They aren't alone, HP, Intel and other have laid off folks as they try to adjust to the changes in their traditional space. Cisco's new CEO is also shaking up his management team.

Intel totally missed the smartphone/tablet cpu market. A huge mistake.

You sleep with Microsoft, you die with Microsoft.

That said, they now have licensed ARM tech for fabs to retain customers or even gain some more but phone/tablet market is also slowing.

I think this is one of those lines that sounds edgy and profound but has no basis in reality. Unless I'm totally missing your point. It sounds like you're saying anybody who makes something exclusively with MS, or relies on PCs for their sales, is tied directly to the success of MS.

I don't think any parts of that are true.

In 2013, Intel's Kirk Skaugen said that Intel's exclusive focus on Microsoft platforms was a thing of the past and that they would now support all "tier-one operating systems" such as Linux, Android, iOS, and Chrome.

Even Intel admitted to it, in 2013 which is quite a bit too late.

Budget season is on us, and decisions will be made in October with fresh cuts in November.
Wish I could see the light at the end of this dark tunnel. 2019 can't come soon enough.

    No-fucking-kidding.

I'll be long gone from this industry if this carries out for another year.

I guess I have a shred of optimism in thinking I can survive in this industry until the next election. Probably wishful thinking.

Oil price stayed at ~$19 from Mar 91 to 99 before crashing to $12 right before 2000.

I would consider a win if it can stay above $50 for the next few years.

SA doesn't have enough money to last that long.

Things are different now. SA's not a material shithole anymore. And it costs money to keep Sharia law.

The airport is f'in bonkers in Edmonton today, parking is FULL.

Red Deer was nuts on the weekend, and I traveled all.over Alberta and have never seen H2 more balls to the walls.

I just have a tough time equating this sort of.activity with 9% unemployment.

To the ones that have been laid off, have you looked outside the province for work? Any luck?

I'm applying anywhere I can, but no one even replying to me. Not even rejection emails lol fack!

Do other provinces look at Alberta engineers as "oil engineers" exclusively, and thus black list us?

No they just look at you as a greedy multi-millionaire Albertan coming to take their Jerbs. A lot of them also think you will bail as soon as oil comes back up.

The only way you are ever going to get a job out in BC for example is to pretty well nerf your resume and remove too much evidence that you are albertan.

My brother had the exact problem trying to get an electrician job out in BC, lots of opportunities. Just no callbacks.

    Its not just engineers.
