You are completely correct and I am sorry. I should have stated I am speaking about mechanical, manufacturing engineers. My last office mates girlfriend is a Chemical Engineer. Last I heard she was working three days a week so sorry about not being specific.

I honestly don't know. Trust me, I would love nothing more than a 12 hour a day job where I had no time to come on here.

All I want to do is make a meaningful contribution to something during my 8 hours a day here. it just never seems to work out that way.

I did more honest work part time while I was in high school at a starbucks.

This is exactly how I feel.. I am very lucky and fortunate to have a full time job in this economy. But the work sucks, hardly doing anything these days in the office and its just meaningless work. I am lucky to have shop work out back that I can do to make the days go by quicker.

I am planning on going back to school to get my engineering degree (currently a technologist). That is all I have to look forward too haha. Except, who knows what the economy will be like after I am done.

Its why I love my business and being a small-business owner. I'd love for it to become a full-time gig. Hell, my companies stated business model is to specifically provide beneficial technologies to Albertans and businesses, and even that doesn't change anything, still just another cog in the wheel.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I honestly would have quit if I was in your position, but at least this gives you the ability to draw a paycheque while maybe finding a way out.

No severance if they had laid you off?

I took the old job back... fml

The way I see it is its a live to fight another day decision, and the first thing I did was go to my old boss and tell him I wanted an expanded role with more responsibility and the ability to take on work outside my defined role when possible. Also that I wanted a parking spot lol ( which was a semi-joke response to being told my salary is frozen). Thankful to have a job going forward, but its a bit of a shit sandwich situation for me.

We will see how the next 6 months goes...
Good for you. I know many engineers that are moving back to China.

I was laid off July 8th (fucking walked) after working as pm for 14 months. Stepping into the largest project this co (mfg) has ever had. Code 1 documentation 6 months late when I stepped in. I even spent 2 days there on my own time there talking to everybody in the building to get a sense of what the workplace was like on a daily basis. (after 5 years still had bad taste in my mouth from a similar previous job of 10yrs)

I knew the owner as a previous vendor to him. Got the job no problem lol

Complete nightmare. Was a rough but I got us thru and got walked just before MRB submittal.

I am just grateful I had employment for 14 months

Considering my age, only a few years being here, and the fact that I would have turned down a job. I doubt the severance would have been enough to string me along to the next opportunity.

At least drawing a paycheck I can work on things like paying off my mortgage and contributing to savings. I am certainly being a lot more straight with my employer about what I want to be doing with my 8 hours a day here.

I was made some vauge promises that i wasn't going to be stuck doing this forever and I intend to hold them to that.

Nexen is doing another 300-350 people. My guess is most from the oil sands division but does anyone have any info on this?

Damn, it sounds real bad out there. This is probly why there aren't any humble brag "check out my new heloc wheels" and CCR meals threads on beyond anymore.
