The fact that airliners have slowed has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with energy cost. conventional jet engines can be ramped up to run another 100 km/h relatively easily, but it sucks a lot more fuel, and makes the planes heavier and noisier.
SCRAM jets are still my preferred "next step" for long distance flights. They are a bit tricky because they operate at a narrow velocity window, so some form of conventional engines are likely required for take off and landing. Still, could do Calgary to tokyo in only a couple hours, which sounds good to me.
