Makes total sense. Governments are notorious for giving with one hand and taking away with the other. Seems sensible if a person is significantly and permanently disabled, and is receiving government money for that disability, that the government stop taking money away from them in the form of student loan payments.

Massive student loans are a symptom of a very broken secondary education system, and loan forgiveness is a band-aid solution, but it is a positive step. Obama probably has no ability to fix the root issues, so I applaud him for doing what he can.

The laws were in place to achieve this 4 years ago. People weren't using the program. Obama is now just being proactive by sending them letters detailing their eligibility.

    No real news here.

It's a little more than that from what I can see. Yes, these people were eligible before, but the application process was complex. Now, once you get the letter, you are pre-approved and just need to sign it and send it back. No application needed.

^^A thing of the past, sadly. From what I've read, there isn't so much loan forgiveness as a completion deduction. It's better than nothing that's for sure but pales in comparison to the way it used to be.

Comrade, the NDP will ensure that students get a loan that gets remissed, as well as the deduction!

My friend's brother that became a dentist got his entire loan remissed back then. That was serious money - $60K I think.
