Default Alberta NDP Government to run as big a deficit as the Federal Liberals

10 billion deficit, in a province of under 4.5 million with still not insignificant resource revenue.

These clowns make Trudeau seem reasonable.

Wtf are they spending it on...

    http://boereport.com/2016/04/14/albe...nveils-budget/

EDMONTON – It’s budget day in Alberta, but Finance Minister Joe Ceci has already announced the biggest piece of bad news. Ceci has said the oil-reliant province will confirm a budget deficit in excess of $10 billion.

But he says the budget will also include updated details on job creation and economic diversification strategies. The prolonged slump in oil prices has resulted in tens of thousands of job losses in Alberta and placed pressure on Ceci and Premier Rachel Notley to cut spending to avoid skyrocketing debt. Ceci and Notley have said that some new programs will be delayed or spread over a longer time, but that front-line jobs will not be cut.

An accelerated $34-billion infrastructure program is to continue. The government also plans to spend an additional $500 million or more in seniors housing. Notley has said making deep cuts would only make a bad situation worse.

The low prices have dampened the bottom lines of energy producing provinces across the country. The government of Newfoundland and Labrador, another province heavily reliant on energy income, is also to table a budget Thursday.

Tax hikes, job losses and spending cuts are among grim expectations as the oil price slide takes its toll there as well. West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark price for oil, fell below US$30 a barrel in January, but has recovered slightly and hovers in the low $40s. It was more than US $100 a barrel in the summer of 2014.

Notley’s provincewide TV address last week revealed this year’s resource revenue will total $1.4 billion compared with almost $9 billion in the 2014-15 budget year. The budget is also to include details of a new carbon tax set to begin Jan. 1. It’s part of Alberta’s climate-change plan and is to provide incentives to go greener by increasing the cost of everything from gas at the pumps to home heating and electricity.

The tax is expected to bring in $3 billion a year, but the government plans to give rebates to low and middle-income Albertans. Opposition Wildrose Leader Brian Jean says the government needs to rethink the tax given the sluggish economy. Ric McIver of the PCs says it’s time to bring in a plan to get Alberta’s books back in balance.

What is the total revenue that they have (gross) for each budget? I thought there would be a wikipedia page on the previous budgets but unlike the federal budget there is not.

I.e are they spending 50 Billion total and only going 10 Billion into the red.

Best part is how Notley compared the resource revenue to 2014-2015 of $9 billion to make us think she's working with a lot less.

"Notley’s provincewide TV address last week revealed this year’s resource revenue will total $1.4 billion compared with almost $9 billion in the 2014-15 budget year."

But this means even if they got that kinda money now, they'd still in the red for $2.4 billion.

To put this in perspective this is just shy ( by about a billion ) of the average deficit Ontario has posted annually since 2001...

Oh yea and they have 3 times our population and are the poster child for debt and uncontrollable spending.

    Thats fucked.

It might be important to note that this image depicts the PC's budget from March last year.

So around 40-45 Billion revenue predicted. Im guessing around 10 Billion of this was oil revenue. So 35 Billion Approx Revenue without it. Im thinking the NDP will spend around 50-55 Billion this year.

So in other words the the NDP is projecting a deficit equal to around 30% of annual revenue.

There is 0 way to spin this positively.

Yep, when the NDP leaves office, this province will be in so much debt and shambles, people who voted them in will try to check themselves into a mental institution for a psyc assessment.

I don't think they'll try that hard, I think the tactic will be the "blame game" Blame the previous government, blame low commodity prices.

no they don't care. they love the debt.

They want benefits now, who cares about long term implications.

Not that I think the conservatives would have done any better.

I think that they might make the whole play about low interest rates, avaliable labour - theres no better time to spend/borrow money...something along those lines.

I would of been interested to see what the wildrose / PC's would of done differently though?

I hope that they come out with their alternative budgets.

You mean like the the typical response to when the NDP comes up with a stupid policy?

"Well the WR or PC's wouldn't have done anything different"

Great argument, lets make a statement that is impossible to refute because its has no basis in anything. Not even worth responding to

It's also worth noting that the 10.4 billion is just the latest estimate. Up from the 6.4 the last time they tried to do marth. I personally am having a hard time believing that they really think projected resource revenue is down an additional 4 billion to account for it.

No this is 100% indicative of a spending problem. I also think that by the time the dust settles the deficit will likely be far closer to 15 than 10.
