Last I checked it gave them borrowing and funding at discretion abilities + activated some of the federal emergency management resources...

Local states of emergency, as done in MD of Wood Buffalo right now, only.

    From Reddit

There's some questions out there on "Why isn't the Province declaring a State of Emergency?"

Well...the simple truth is it is rarely required, and normally only done when an emergency starts spreading across municipalities, and especially regions. This emergency is being handled by the RM of Wood Buffalo, with support from the Province. Simply put, they have the powers they need to manage the emergency, and won't go to a provincial emergency unless required.

Factoid: The only Provincial emergency that has EVER been declared was the 2013 Flooding, spreading from Calgary to High River to Canmore.

That's a good use of the #ymmfire hashtag.

Didn't you know about the celebratory fire evacuation diamond ring?

Geez the whole "State of emergency" announcement has really rattled my NDP hating friends on facebook. I believe there's a local state of emergency, no? All she said (meant) was there was no benefit of going provincial with it. Call it whatever you want, everyone understand how serious the situation is.

Too many average joes jumping on the bandwagon for an opportunity to be haters.

I am literally baffled by the number of folks who are crying "why isn't it a state of emergency" and then turn a blind eye or don't speak to the fact that fortunately there have been no casualties following a city-wide evacuation, that RCMP and CAF services have been mobilized to help with rescue efforts, and that there is nothing to suggest that we are approaching a lack of money and resources to take control and monitor the situation.

A state of emergency doesn't need to be declared in order to trigger services that are already being utilized.

Pretty easy to talk shit when most people couldn't be bothered to find out what even constitutes a state of emergency and the consequences of such.

Haters - "Why isn't it a state of emergency? Make it a state of emergency!!!"

Govt - "Ok, we'll call it a state of emergency, then. What now?"

Haters - "Get all the people you can to help with the situation!"

Govt - "They've been at it from the start already."

    Haters - "Oh."

Exactly. Provincial wide state of emergency doesn't make sense unless the emergency was across several municipalities.

We've already lost a small town, now it's a small city, what's next?
It's not so much civil engineering as it is funding. I'm sure the people who look after this stuff have lots of great ideas but they'd be expensive as hell. A real game changer would be chemical engineering coming up with something way more effective and/or cheap, but who knows if or when that will happen.

From a few pages back someone mentioned there had been 2 births outside of the hospital, thankfully they are ok but can you imagine the absolute hell those parents were going through? This whole situation is a heartbreaker but that one really got to me

Following the stream right now. Latest update is that there's been at least one casualty but they can't say whether it's related to the fire itself or due to a vehicular crash.

Nailed it. You can find the original clip on youtube, someone sped it up a bit and added the exhaust sounds.

What is achieved by declaring a province wide state of emergency? What does it exactly do?
