My buddy said that they lost the building that houses all their radio and network links at approx 2am at long lake. It was between the tree line and the plant. They are worried at how extensive the damage is to the plant.

That's great that your uncle is able to directly help those affected! He should encourage them to register online or by phone with Red Cross to ensure they have access to support such as emergency food, clothing, and hygiene products.Originally posted by Darell_n
Where is this Red Cross money? Everything donated has been from private people or businesses so far. I have an Uncle with 17 people now staying at his place and the only help available is from other locals.
Here's the links:

I hope you can appreciate the effort and time required to mobilize a supply chain to provide relief for 90,000 people spread across a large area. This disaster isn't going to be solved overnight, many of those affected are going to be living in somewhat temporary conditions for months or longer. That's when you're going to want to have an organized distribution of supplies and services, after neighbors and locals have shared all of the immediate resources they can spare.
Couple of images from AMA site of current conditions in town.

you dont think the red cross will have their work cut out for them for the next year (s) with relation to this? sure the hype and personal and corporate donations are there now, but in a month when the hype dies down and everybody else returns to their normal lives, thats where the red cross money is needed.Originally posted by Darell_n

It doesn't matter if it's a humanitarian issue or natural disaster, the logistics behind having to help this many people still take some time, they can only transport so much in overnight to all the evacuee areas that are spread across such a big area.
I'm going to guarantee it's a nuthouse wherever those federal aid supply warehouses are located. Not to mention private businesses and people trying to get supplies and transport in motion.

Air Canada got caught price gouging on flights from Fort Mac May 3 & 4 and is now offering refunds to their customers. Meanwhile Westjet has half there fleet making free flights up there to get people out. Good job boys.
Edit: not free, just on the oil company tab for later.

The public airport, yes. And nobody is left in the city to use it. The private airstrips north of the city is where they were landing.Originally posted by suntan

Google has commissioned updated satellite imagery and has posted them on the Google Crisis Maps website. Looks like they are updating them every 48 hours.
Residents can check on their homes using the updated maps.

Where did you read this? Those airstrips are meant for rinky dinky planes. Not sure there's enough tarmac to land a 737. Regardless, they didn't redeploy "half their fleet".Originally posted by Darell_n

The Oil companies strips? They can land more than "rinky dink" planes.Originally posted by suntan

Westjet flights have been using Firebag which at a quick Google Maps check looks like it has a similar runway size as YMMOriginally posted by suntan

Thanks for the 14 years of LOLs. Govern yourselves accordingly and avoid uppercut reactions!
I can confirm that it's the horizon airport and they can most definitely run 737s...I fly on one every 2 weeks.

I was just going to say, either my eyes have been deceiving me the past 6+ years, or I too have been flying on 737's.Originally posted by 03ozwhip

Pretty sure they can even land the hercules on the oil-company owned strips.
