2 480s end up being around the price of a 1070 and I'm assuming in usual AMD fashion there gonna be power hungry and spew out heat which means some people are probably gonna end up having to upgrade power supplies and fans/cooling solutions which could easily bump you up into 1080 price bracket...

Go ultrawide 3440x1440 if your wallet will support it. I absolutely love mine and cant go back to 16x9.

So what games are you guys playing that requires the very best video cards? Or is it all because of multi-monitor 4K setups? I only ask because my lowly 560Ti can play games like Rainbow Six Seige at 1440p no problem, I may not be able to turn everything on to max and I could probably use a bit more power, but it's not nearly as bad as I would have expected for such an old card. The other games I play I think are pretty easy on the vid card.

My understanding was they were made on their new 14nm tech, which should help with heat and power consumption, and AMD claims power consumption is 150w on average for the 480.

It seems pretty much everyone now has access to the much smaller manufacturing processes (~14nm) so AMD might be more competitive with Intel and Nvidia going forward, but who knows.

AMD rates the TDP of the 480 at 150 watts... TDP of the 1070 is also 150 watts for almost double the performance.

If AMD can compete, it'll be with their software. They pretty much invented how graphics cards will work with DirectX going forwards so they theoretically will have a significant driver advantage with DX12 games, and the 480 will supposedly be able to do VR with way less of a performance hit than Nvidia cards.

Especially if it is just a cut down version the 1070, it'd be no contest.

The 390X already can't do 60fps at normal 1080p resolution, and I'm on ultrawide, so I don't think the 480 is going to cut it for me. I liked not upgrading for four generations so I might spring for the 1070 after all even though I don't want to spend that much right now.
    On DX12, 390X is doing 60fps on 1080p. 1440p drops to 30fps.

AMD cards tends to shine on DX12, where Nvidia cards are pretty much the same on either.

DX12 will solve the multiple GPU issue for both cards.

For me its more about hitting that 100fps mark to make full use of my 1700$ monitor.

Like I said before I got a 980 powering a 3440x1440 and 2X 1920x1080s and can play most games on ultra with the exception of GTA5 and Fallout4

But I really notice a big hit with moddable games when you start throwing in High rez texture packs(Fallout/skyrim) and high count models (cities skylines/GTA5)

I think a single RX480 would be a good contender for gaming on a 2550x1080

Not enough room sadly. Looking at 27" 16:9 currently but will probably hold off for a while due to $$$

I always want to play everything on highest settings. I have 2x970 and am only playing 1080p

Won't devs still require to include sli/crossfire support? Also the scaling is not so hot compare to using the money for a better single card.

No, as long as dev follow the DX12 EMA/IMA framework. Then you can even mix different brands of cards. I expect SLI and Crossfire standard to be obsolete after full DX12 adaptation in a year or so.

Keep in mind that $550 for a card that will kick the living shit out of a 980 TI or TITAN X is one hell of a deal. The big push is is what resolution you're playing at:

    1920x1080 = 1070 for sure
2560x1440 = 1070 great card, 1080 is a little overkill but better if you want all the eye candy
    Ultra-wide or 4K = 1080 for sure

VR = both the 1070 and 1080 have the new nVidia VR tech built in, but the 1080 by default of engineering has more render cores. This one is pretty much up to real world usage, I would say, but personally, I would use a 1080 for at the least a HTC Vive... not too familiar with how the Oculus Rift renders and displays tho, never used one :|

Sorry, where are the reviews saying the 1070 kicks the shit out of the 980Ti?

The 1080 seems to be well ahead but the 1070 looks to be only marginally better than the 980ti and Titan X - still seems like a good deal all things considered, basically top-tier previous generation performance for a very reasonable price (typical cycle).

Waiting on Polaris nda's to lift at the end of June to decide. Picking up a vive at the end of the month and need to retool my machine for that. 1070 looks promising but depends what amd brings to the table considering it's almost half the price point

I have several 1080s right now - yes geeked out. We have 4 gaming systems in the home though, and 2 ROG Swift 27", 1 Acer 4k Gsync 28", and 1 34" ROG Swift to drive. 2 singles and my SLI system right now. The SLI 1080 system is a new Broadwell E x99 6800k box. This thing is...fast.

I'm going to buy a single 1070 out of curiosity as well, and build a little micro system out of the extra parts I have left over with a 6700k cpu. 1070 is a great deal, and it looks like it's at least as fast as the Titan/980ti. Any of our 1080 systems smoke the previous occupants, be they 980ti, one Titan, or the 980sli system I had.

Using the new ROG 34" 100hz gsync monitor, with the 1080 sli system I can pretty much maintain that 100fps max in every single game I've tried (4tb Steam library plus every DCS combat flight sim module made so far, Starcraft2, etc). That's what I was hoping 1080 sli would do - and this is with the old style SLI bridge as the HBM bridge isn't out yet (on order).

We picked up a used Rift and a NIB Vive while back in Calgary last week - if anyone wants specific 1080 intel based on the VR headsets PM me, as I'll be trying the popular games with both with the 1080 (not sli unfortunately, but wth).

Overall, I would say if you didn't have a 980ti/Titan before, it's worth the upgrade, otherwise I would wait for the high bandwidth memory cards to come out next year, which is where the real jump will happen, although the 1080 is quite a large jump ahead, far more than I saw going from 580 to 680 to 780 to 980, that's for sure.

Yup its the Acer X34 I absolutely love this thing. Its got everything you could imagine. 3440x1440p, 34" curved, 100hz IPS, 4ms GtG, RGB LEDs, Vesa Compatible (with optional Bracket)

    Amazon Link

Other 2 monitors are BenQ XL2411Z (although I have to run them at 100hz otherwise it forces the Acer to run at 60hz) I'm curious to see if that changes when I put in the 1080...

There is also the same panel with Freesync at a couple hundred less since they have to pay Nvidia for G-Sync. But then you have to switch to the Red team.

Yup that's the Acer XR34 . I originally ordered that off amazon because the X34 was out of stock and the X34 had Red Highlights on the stand which I didn't want. 2days after I received the XR34 I got a email from amazon the X34 was back in stock and they updated the picture and it had the same stand as the XR so I ponied up the extra cash and exchanged it. ~400cad$ difference

I had the Acer 34" as well, but the overclock to 100hz would only hit 95, so I returned it. I bought the ROG Swift PG348Q instead - pretty much the same deal, they both are pretty indistinguishable, but the Asus stays at 100hz no problem. I have 2 other ROG Swift 27", one 144 and the other 165hz. All work great. I found another used Acer34" for sale and might buy it as well, as the owner says it has no issues with staying at 100hz overclock.

1080 and 1080 SLI have been running the 34" Swift PG348Q in 1440p at ultra settings with most games at 100hz pinned, which is what I was after. DCS flight sims is about the only one I'm seeing a bit of drops into lower FPS, but that was expected, as the SLI profile isn't optimized by nVidia and one of those home made jobs with nVidia inspector. Still, it's a large improvement over the Titan and 980ti, and 980sli systems I replaced with 1080 cards. The new Asus x99 Strix motherboard for the Broadwell E cpus is pretty cool too.

RX480 Canadian pricing is out, exchange rate is absolutely brutal (they are using over 40%), but the 8gb is $339 at memex ($239 in the USA / $199 for 4gb). Appears to benchmark similar to a GTX 970 which are mostly $389 CAD. Not such a good deal up here in Canada, but still seems to be a pretty good little card for the money. Beats the hell out of my 560Ti I'm sure. You're also still only $230 away from a 1070.

Planning to build a new photo editing rig around Skylake-X/Optane (I don't think I can wait all the way to Canonlake-E/X), but I don't do much with the video card so I have been keeping an eye on the cheaper stuff. I've got a long time to wait anyway haha.
