There is no "shitty watches" thread so I hope it's OK that I ask my question here haha. My beater hiking/swimming/diving etc. watch finally died (really old Timex Ironman) and I need to replace it. Obviously this is not a big purchase decision, but is there anything objectively better between something like an Ironman or Casio G-shock (or similar)? Any others I should look at? I was looking at this one:

    https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-G100-1BV...ywords=g+shock

    Or this:

    https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-DW5600E-...ywords=g+shock

Or are all these watches coming out of the same factory and basically disposable so maybe it doesn't even matter? I'm open to anything ~$100 TIA

Hey mitsu, I have one of these:
    https://www.amazon.ca/Casio-G-Shock-...eywords=GA-150

that has just been sitting in a drawer for about a year...I would sell it for pretty cheap if you were interested.

There's a handful of Citizen eco-drive watches on clearance at thebay.com for $149.99 (from $450) that would be decent beaters.

As someone with 12 G Shocks...I think...I have to vote for one of those.

GREAT beaters...and depending on your personal tastes for colours and designs you can find some really funky ones haha....

That is very generous of you but I am not a fan of the all-black! Thanks anyway I appreciate it.

    100% what I would recommend.

Casio Edifice is also a good option for under $100 from Costco.ca

These two look pretty good but the Citizen might be a little too nice for what I'm going to use it for haha - not sure I want a rigid stainless steel bracelet either as it doesn't seem like it would be comfortable for activities. They look like great value though:

The Costco one is 2.0 inches wide though haha, that is wider than my wrist I think but I like it otherwise.

It's going to be in salt water too if that matters.

What type of watch you looking for? Dress? Sport? etc.

Sport, I guess. I just wear it on vacation, hiking, diving, swimming, etc. I don't normally wear a watch day-to-day but the more I look in the wrist shot thread maybe I need two watches

I have mostly been looking at the simpler, less gawdy G-shocks that aren't enormous or overly complicated. I am literally replacing one of these haha, which was probably $20 when I got it 15 years ago or whatever, so anything is an upgrade.

Mine looks like the water sealing failed, it has condensation inside and it stopped working while I was swimming last week in Mexico.

The Drive line from Citizen is great and pretty affordable. Solar cell, never needs a battery, built well. I have two, recommended.

I vote for a g-shock as well. I use one for my daily at work. I'm a welder so take that for what you will. Its all spattered up and has never skipped a beat. I've used it 3 years now.

I looked a the Drive models and beater watch or not, I really like this one, but I feel like it's a watch that would probably be 50% off sometimes, no?

I will probably end up with a nice watch, and then a cheap G-shock. I can see how all you guys are addicted

I have that one, it's great-looking but not really an outdoorsy-style watch like a G-shock. Look into the Casio ProTrek line as well, they tend to be a bit more money than the G-shocks but you can definitely score deals on them.

Thanks. Looked at the ProTrek but I think they are too busy for me. I will take a look at the Costco ones next time I'm in there regardless. The 51.2mm might be too big for my tastes, we will see.

The Bay has about half their Citizens on sale - maybe a good time to get an entry level casual/dress watch.

    Are these any good?

This ones on sale today and wasn't yesterday:

I also like the Hamilton Khaki but I think too expensive for me.

I came here looking to replace my $20 timex beater and have spent the last 2 days looking at watches of every price range

Also I liked this one but is it a piece of junk?

I was gonna say MVMT but you said you wanted a watch for hiking and such but not a bulbous G-shock.

MVMT is decent for sub $100 imo.

If you want durable cheap too, the legit Russian Vostok Amphibias and Komandirskies can take a beating.

Went to The Bay downtown today to look at some Citizens (all are 25% off for the long weekend), and they had almost no stock compared to online. I don't think I would ever buy a watch sight unseen so that rules out most of those I think. I really like the concept of never needing a battery.

I think my new plan is to buy myself a nice leather strap daily driver for $200-500 and see how I like it. Then I will just buy some dirt cheap beater on amazon or something for my hiking/swimming watch. Thanks for everyone's help though I do appreciate it - sorry for the subject change haha.
