Default I'm going to church tomorow.

I kid you not. It's some sort of Christian thingy, but I'm going.

Despite burning up as I walk in the door, any last advice?

I went to one where all the people started answering back in unison to the dude in the dress, I think it was Catholic. Then they started shaking hands or hugging the people beside them. It was weird, I declined. Mostly because I didn't know what was happening, I was looking around like WTF is going on here?

Don't know the flavor, but I did ask if we could do black God and sing and dance. That would be a nice change from "you're all POS sinners".

I thought that would be fun, but my savior didn't think so.

If you're not religious - why go at all?

Uh... Try and keep your eyes open, toughest bit... Shake hands when everyone else does and say "peace be with you" can't drink the wine or eat the wafer, but you can still go up and cross your arms over your chest for a blessing if you want to be a part of it all... After that bit everyone knees for a bit and prays... So just sit there with your head down till the priest starts talking again... That's about it

Kudos to you, 1972 would've been the last year I attended a regular church service.

Obvious Christian bashing thread? At least try to be subtle.

Depends so much on the place you go to. It could be 500-1000 year old songs, the rigidity of the liturgy and the brick-and-mortar sermon about why Jesus crossed the road - or - it could be something personal and life altering.

(was raised Lutheran, a sect that even Martin Luther warned against making)

I was raised Catholic, attended church every Sunday, went to Catholic school etc. I haven't attended church regularly in many many years now.

A church if you're not a believer is just a building like any other with people inside. A Catholic service is what, an hour at most? If you're not familiar with it ya it's probably a little weird, but you don't really have to do anything crazy. Sit, stand, kneel and shake hands when you see others doing it, you don't need to go up for anything, and open a book and sing along to some kinda wacky songs, then it's all over.

I've certainly had a go at organized religion in other threads, but my stance on it doesn't stop me from attending once a year to make my Mom happy

A friend who was a hard core aethiest now attends church. He made a lot of the same claims as posters here who thought they would burn up the second they attended church. Oddly enough he never did.

You anti church ego maniacs should partake in the alpha course at a church and report back your findings. I'd love to hear how you burned up as you entered the church.

If anyone actually believed they'd burn up, they'd have to confess a belief in God.

There was an Snl pre taped sketch awhile ago that featured common characters you'd find in any Catholic church and having grown up Christian the characters were bang on and the same. ..check it out if you want to know the common types of people you'd find lol

Why bother, there's a perfectly good fiction section at any book store with way more interesting made up stories :-)
