Best way to change version of MS Office 2013?

To make a long story short, I have an institutional version of MS Office 2013 installed on my machine and my activation key is no longer working. I have a new retail activation key, but when I try to enter it, I get an error saying the key is for a different version of windows (institutional vs. retail).

Does anyone know if it's possible to somehow change the "version" of Office 2013 without uninstalling or reinstalling?

I do have the installation files as well and could reinstall. But is it better to uninstall the existing installation first and then re-install, or should I install over top of the existing one? I'm am not sure what is better in terms of allocation on the disk, etc.

There's no way to change the version.

Was just curious because I know you can change the version when hacking apart Windows OS installation files.

What is the best way to reinstall the new software then?

If your current version still works with reduced functionality, then you might just want to live with it, as it's probably disabled functions that you don't use anyway.

If not, uninstall Office via Programs and Features, restart the computer (even if it doesn't prompt you to), then install the retail version of Office.
