Default Would you buy a used non-warrantied S4?

Debating getting a 2011 or 2012 S4 with the DSG. Would be a non CPO so not covered under warranty - under around 80,000km.

Would you buy an Audi without a warranty? Not considering BMW/MB as don't hold much interest for me personally.

    Appreciate your thoughts....

    Manual, yeah.

    DSG, make sure it's cheap.

And this is from an ex-owner.

enjoy some light reading on DSG.

Further away from 2010/2011 year the better. I just sold mine to a mechanic friend who seems ok with the risk. At least he can save on labor when shit goes south.

Oh, also avoid 2010 and early 2011s with faulty water pumps and thermostats.

I got hit with water pump a year in. Thermostats replaced 3 times after that. Every time it take turns failing open or close.

The problem with this is, there is a lot of labor hrs to replace either.

I was surprised to see that these S4s only do 0-60 in a hair under 5 seconds. ..if you reliability with almost as good speed get a G37.

Would I? Yes I would. Never owned a car with a warranty.

Should you? That's for you to decide.

That 0-60 time is underated. G37 is around 5.7 seconds.

Mine wasn't stock, but it roasted g37/370z/mustangs etc.

& since when is a sub 5 second 0-60 "average/slow"? That will beat 99% of the average commuter cars on the road here.

With full records maybe ,but is there any reason not to wait for a CPO one to come up?

When you look at it make sure to take a good look at the lip around the front fenders the have zero protection and if it's been wintered it is more then likely sandblasted down to metal and rusting away. Now that I know about this problem I notice some really haggard A4's and S4's driving around.

Edit: and get one with a sport diff because if you don't you will forever wonder what could have been

Motor Trends says the S4 will do it in 4.4 seconds

I've owned two manual S4's off warranty for a total of about 8 years (2000 B5 & 2006 B7). I did not have one single problem outside routine maintenance that entire time and I daily drove them year round. The B5 had been chipped for about 140,000km as well. I wouldn't be afraid of owning a B8 off warranty as long as it's been well taken care of. Identify any common problem spots and do some cheap preventative maintenance. If it's been bagged, you'll probably end up with problems like any other car. I would never buy a lease back either.

Obviously I'd rather own any car on warranty, but I wouldn't be afraid of a well taken care of sample off warranty.

I've been thinking about a B8 tiptronic for my next vehicle as well.

Let us know what you find!

I just had the DSG go on my 2011, I would avoid that and look at a manual. The DSG and the Sport Diff are two high cost items to replace so you may want to try and avoid those options.

Most people who own S4's would prefer to have the $1500 sport diff. option on their car.

I wasn't aware that sports diffs are common failures.

Are you just saying that they're high cost replacements or that they're also common faults in B8's?

Sport Diff isn't bad. But it's not very common option on early years as most buyers don't care.
