I was a roofer once. Unless there is a serious tstorm heading your way, you keep on working through the rain. Obviously no one is going to want to work when thunder and lightning are all around and hail is coming down.

A thunder shower like this, with strikes maybe somewhere, every 5 minutes, wasnt exactly a cause for evacuation.

It should be the same across the board when it comes to heights and construction, a 30/30 rule and roofers shouldn't be the exception.

it's the company that's going to be in shit for not enforcing some sort of regulation on when you work through storms. rain is one thing, lightning and thunder just seconds apart is a totally different thing.

it may not be their fault, it could have been the bosses fault by telling them to work through, but that shit is not safe in any way. BUT, most roofers(companies?) also don't seem to care about safety at all, hence my comment.

    Haha no kidding.

My wife was like "why were they on the roof when there was a thunderstorm around?".. my reply? Roofers aren't exactly the smartest people.

The airport has a system to detect potential lightning strikes in the vicinity and once the warning goes out all the ground crews stop working and go inside. It looks like those roofers were working on the Esso Avitat building. If there was lightning that close then for sure there was a lightning advisory.

Pretty bad if the ramp crews at Avitat went inside but the roofers kept on working...

There was one person that went to hospital that wasn't a roofer--an aircraft mechanic. It was a niece's boyfriend. Something about it going through a tool he had in his hand, according to his comment on FB.

The roofers would have no way of knowing why the ramp workers left - unless perhaps someone was paying attention up there (foreman?) most guys have their heads down.

Also, if the lighting safety system is prediction based (some systems advise warnings based on ground to atmospheric potential electrical difference) and not actual strike based, its probably not being fed to the roofers - unless there is an external alarm system siren ???

Not sure about the hangars at the south end but the main terminal has white strobe lights that flash to warn ground crews. I believe it activates when potential lightning is within 5 or 7 miles of the airport.

If no visual warning for those hangars then maybe someone in the hangar could have let the roofers know. Maybe they did and ignored it. Who knows. Some of those FBO's are fly by night operations

YYC airport operators can be placed on the automated call list, where they will receive an alert via phone for active "electrical storm" within the vicinity. Our company at the airport has invested in our own detection system as we found the airport system to be inaccurate at times because we are on the opposite side of the airfield as the terminal.

30/30 rule should be pretty standard.

But who are we kidding, roofers only stop work to crush up percocets and shotgun a lucky lager

30/30 means no roofing gets done anywhere in the city in July/August of this year.
But truth about the lager and percocets.

Serious, multiple storms inbound the middle of Calgary right now (an hour away maybe) and NOTHING from Environment Canada regarding this, even a fucking watch. Get a clue.

They probably think, ah fuck there's another one for Calgary, they're probably used to it this year
