lawn problems

Hey guys, so I've been trying to revive the lawn at my parents house and there's this grass growing in a decently sized patch. It seems to grow faster and taller than the other grass on the lawn. Can anyone tell me what it is and if it's normal, if not, how do I get rid of it? Thanks in advance

I have some of those in the areas on the side of my house, where the grass doesn't grow as well. I don't think they are a weed, just some wild grass, must be heartier thus it grows on less water and nutrients.

Looks like Bromus inermis. It's a native grass, but not really a desired lawn species. Most lawns are Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass).

We have grass and then some stuff on top that looks like wheat.

Looks like Elymus Repens or commonly known as couch or quackgrass.

It has a nasty underground root system and it's very hard to get rid of.

Whatever it was, I just sprayed the patch with roundup. Gonna wait for it to die then seed the area. If it is quackgrass, what's the best way of removing it the dead grass? I was watching videos saying not to till the area because if you break the rhizomes up it can just spread the plant. I was thinking of digging up the dead patch but should I just rake it now?

anything you dont want growing in your lawn is a weed lol

Best way is good, old fashioned, hand digging them out...which sucks.

quack grass is frickin incredible! if you can actually pull the root out (impossible unless soil is really soft) you will see that they are very thick roots (for grass) and they actually grow horizontally. So you will be pulling out that one root over a foot or more away. They usually just break and it'll grow back lol
