Welcome to Walmart and being super pushy with their Mastercards
I don't think that is it at all. They are still going to accept M/C, AE, debit and more, so it's not that they are pushing M/C.Originally posted by firebane

Both sides have said this is over the swipe fees charged by Visa, where Visa is not budging, and Walmart says their fees are too high.

On a side note I notice Walmart recently start charging for plastic bags as well...
VISA charging higher than AMEX? That's a first.
Been wondering if I should change my RBC avion Visa to an RBC Westjet Mastercard. Maybe this is the push I needed. I don't shop at WallyWorld that often, but I want the option.

Meh. My Captial One Mastercard went from being my Costco credit card to my Costco and Walmart credit card.
Whelp, my only CC's are two Visas. Looks like WalMart is off my shopping list.
I wont shop anywhere a company charges me 5cents for a .1c bag, and wastes my time at checkout. Especially if the bagless idea is predicated on plastic bags being "bad" which has been proven unequivocally to be bullshit.Originally posted by pheoxs

Well yes... total charges based on usage. I'd bet for every 10 visa transactions there's 1 or 2 AMEX at max.Originally posted by flipstah

5 cents a bag...w/e. I bring my own reusable bags 90% of the time.
I don't really shop at Walmart so this doesn't affect me. I have a visa, m/c, amex, and have a debit. I don't understand why some people are so tied up with one card
GO FLAMES GO!
Yeah, and not just that but if you bring re-usable bags, you get a discount for each bag you bring. I'm not sure how much, but the last time I was at Superstore the people ahead of me got it and didn't even know it was a thing.Originally posted by Sugarphreak
I was on this wagon for a while, but Safeway has free bags that are complete crap, while Superstore has much higher quality plastic bags for 5 cents.
So I spend an extra quarter a week, big deal... especially considering I re-use those bags for a variety of things like kitchen and bathroom garbage. The Safeway ones are crap, they have holes in the bottom and tear if you even look at them funny... the Superstore ones are actually usable.
The cost of purchasing kitchen garbage bags is way more than the 5 cent cost at the till.
Title's misleading. Walmart released a statement Friday saying they will in future stop accepting VISA- at current time I believe they still do.
This whole thing strikes me as a negotiation tactic. You think a retailer as big as Wal-Mart doesnt negotiate their fees with VISA/MC/etc? They say in the article they're good for $100M a year.
Wal-Mart is playing chicken and VISA hasnt blinked yet.
I pretty much use my debit card wherever I go anyways. Rarely use my Visa unless it's absolutely required (rental cars, hotels, etc).
I guess I'm an anomaly? Haha

Maybe, but Costco doesn't accept Visa either. They just recently started accepting MasterCard after ending their arrangement with Amex. There may indeed be an angle here with regards to the fees Visa charges versus MasterCard by my guess is that it has more to do with Walmart pushing their own branded MasterCard.Originally posted by prae

I use my credit card for every purchase that I can (and always pay it off in full). It's effectively like a debit card for me, I don't use it for financing anything.Originally posted by Maxx Mazda

Why don't you want to get a rewards CC? Free money man. haha

Our household uses MC like some people use debit. Everything, and I mean everything, goes on that card and then we just wipe it out at the end of the month. Anywhere from $3500 - $5000 in free travel a year.

I use Visa pretty much anywhere that accepts it. I've bought a single slurpee on visa.
