Default Calgary police officers charged in corruption probe

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...lton-1.3636873

2 Police officers suspended without pay as of Aug 12 last year.

As of wednesday they are charged with: breach of trust, bribery and unauthorized use of a computer system charges and
criminal harassment, breach of trust, bribery and unauthorized use of a computer system.

These officers were paid tens of thousands of dollars in cash to protect a home of a wealthy oil executive who had hundreds of thousands of dollars of wine he wanted protected. They never disclosed this income.

Interesting to see the chief of police say this behavior is unacceptable but they had to transfer this file to the Edmonton branch to investigate. If it was unacceptable why wouldn't they charge the officers themselves? Why not disclose this when the officers were suspended without pay?

    Re read the article.

They were charged by the CPS Anti Corruption unit. The file was reviewed by the Edmonton Crown and adjudicated by an Edmonton JP for release to ensure no conflicts of interest took place. Nothing was transferred.

And what exactly are you asking they disclose? The names of those suspended without pay? Because under privacy laws, until they are charged with an offence, they have rights like any other person alleged to have broken the law. The investigation? Because it's still active and it involves corruption and I imagine to protect the integrity of the investigation. Not exactly something you disclose when you are trying to root it out.

Standard procedure? You want corrupt cops to investigate and process it themselves? How does that even make sense?

The police investigate themselves all the time. The chief seems pretty sure of his officers guilty actions to suspend them without pay and to throw them under the bus. If that's the case why bother getting Edmonton involved at all?

Makes it seem he doesn't trust his own police force to do their job.

These cops sure had a sweet gig pocketing tens of thousands of dollars.. Makes you wonder what else they were up to.

Pretty standard to bring in an impartial 3rd party in these situations for transparency.

So you want them to not investigate themselves because you complain of corruption, and then when they don't do it, you claim something is up with that too? And because the chief suspended them that automatically deems them guilty enough to throw under the bus and he doesn't trust them, not because he is trying to protect the service from having potentially corrupt cops working in it. That couldn't be it, could it?

Are you seriously complaining they brought in someone else for transparency in order to ensure they are fully investigated and that the charges are legitimate? So that if they are in fact corrupt and the evidence is there, they stand a chance of conviction?

You can't suck and blow at the same time, bud. You still haven't answered my questions, BTW.

There are a lot of legitimate concerns surrounding issues of police corruption, but gwill has raised none of them.

Phil, as always, you are a class act.

    I can see it now...

Gwill starts new thread....CPS members found innocent on corruption charges.

Why did we let CPS investigate there own members, this is ridiculous, should of had EPS or ASIRT or a third party help with this case.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. His stance in the food allergy thread was out to lunch and now this one is just bizarre.

The issue wasn't that they didn't disclose the income, it is because they used police resources for a private/unlawful matters. Earning money just makes it more serious.

Although my general mentality is 'Fuck tha police" gotta give props to phil for constantly fighting a losing battle by defending the CPS and doing so in a classy and diplomatic way.
