Default Auto insurance renewal after suspension

So I had a suspension from too many demerit points and did the month penalty last year. I'm with AMA and my renewal for my insurance just came in the mail and its $5500 for the year. Is it worth shopping for new insurance or waste of time as when they check my abstract the suspension will be on my record?

It is absolutely worth shopping around. Open private market, so you should be able to get a better rate elsewhere.

With that said, prepared to be bent over no matter where you go. It is a risk-based system, and someone who doesn't learn to drive properly after multiple tickets is considered high risk.

I know I'm gonna have to pay a lot more but I didn't think it would be more than double. Went from $1700 to now they want $5500 a year. Thanks relyt92 I will give touchstone a call.

Isn't there a course you can take that once completed it knocks off a couple demerits so you can avoid the suspension?

Either way if you'd asked me what I thought it would cost with that on your record I actually might have guessed higher. Always worth shopping around though.

From an insurance perspective, the demerits don't matter. Hell, the 30 day suspension doesn't matter. What matters is that I'm assuming you collected several traffic violations to accumulate the demerits to get to the suspension. It's the tickets that are killing you, and those take three years to fall off.

Broker would of probably avoided this to begin with... History seems to only be reviewed if you have an at fault claim... Uh... I mean, I'm an angel.... Don't mind me Bill

If he has already be convicted of X offense and given a suspension as sentence the course is not going to help much. The mark is there.

Its best to take the course Right after an incident. Then you can take that to the judge and prove your working on it. Plead guilty and take a reduced sentence. Hopefully no suspension.

But the course will still knock of demerits and look good to insurance.

I think you missed the part in my post where I said demerits don't matter in the world of insurance.

Hey guys I've already complete the suspension last September 2015 and was granted a restricted license so I could still work because I drive a big truck in Calgary and surrounding areas.

You rack up 15 demerits in two years and you're claiming to be a professional driver? Maybe paying $500/month in insurance will smarten you up.

How many convictions do you have since June 30, 2013?
Do you have a copy of your driver abstract from the registry?

    God, this is terrifying.

Idiot loses his license, after proving repeatedly his inability to drive within the confines of the law.

Idiot is then given a special license, because he drives for a living
