Default Auto Insurance For "Uber" Drivers

Some of you may have heard recently that there is now finally an insurance solution available for people wanting to drive for Uber or other ride sharing companies. Some companies have come online effective immediately and some of them aren't quite ready yet but most will be up & running by the end of the summer. The cost and approach is varied somewhat from company to company but the general cost seems to be about $15 - $25 a month. The one condition that seems to be constant across all the companies so far is that driving time be capped at 20 hours per week. There is also a function for the insurance companies to get driver stats from Uber (or Lyft or whatever) to confirm time on the clock.

As this is new territory for the entire insurance industry I expect there will changes over the coming years (or sooner). But for now, there is finally a reasonable solution on the table.

This is an addition to your existing auto insurance coverage?

Yes, it's meant to supplement a normal personal auto policy. Most insurance companies will simply have it as a separate endorsement that gets added to an existing policy. One company will just rate you for business use instead but the end cost is about the same either way.

So with that, really, the City of Calgary can't oppose it I guess, with maybe the exception of vehicle inspections...

I feel like someway or another, the POS city council will find some reason not to allow it again. Uber will only try so many times until they get fed up.

I thought it was the criminal check they had issues with? Dear leader doesn't like non-convicted citizens making a living

I wonder, just off the top of my head here, but since the hailing service is web based, could a different municipality state that the UBER is fine. The driver is not based out of Calgary, and bypass the city all together? Could be a good revenue stream for say the MD of Rockyview. legalize them there, and it kinda becomes like the airport, where only one company can park there, but people can hail cabs from any company....
