Default Tesla Driver Killed in Autopilot Mode

    http://www.theverge.com/2016/6/30/12...nomous-model-s

Sounds like a tractor trailer crossed the highway in front of the Tesla S and the radar mistook the trailer for a highway sign and the car drove under the trailer-first point of impact was the windshield.

WHat was the Tesla driver doing to not notice a giant trailer in front of them and hit the brakes? Trucks dont exactly accelerate quickly.

One would expect though that the vehicle should've been designed to pick up something like a semi crossing your path. Now there is the issue of why the diver didn't see the semi but many people become complacent with things that a vehicle will automatically do for you and become, let's say, brain dead. Kind of like people with vehicles that have automatic headlights that don't turn their headlights on when in a mid-afternoon thundershower deluge.

Or, in some cases (too many), in the dead of night!

Or, in the case of this guy, you're doing 70MPH down the highway and watching Harry Potter instead of the road.

The collision was extremely avoidable, even slowing down slightly would have saved him as the truck was mostly across the highway by the time he hit it - impact was with the rearward end of the trailer. Driver should have seen it, but this case also shows why Tesla was foolish to rely only on optical cameras for vehicle detection instead of Lidar/Radar.

Not if you don't leave them in auto mode. A lot of people don't realize the switch has to be in auto mode, they just get told "your car has auto headlights" and they think they will never have to touch anything.

wOW, that seems like a major oversight. A non-visual, second opinion of an objects closure rate should have been a no-brainer for a car that touts hands free.

Something that is human life dependent should always have a backup. A driver who has been conditioned to automation isn't it.

Yeah while the S does have front-looking radar for setting distance in cruise control, it doesn't appear it's integrated into the Autopilot system for detecting oncoming cars. Tesla blames the accident on the cameras not being able to pick up the white trailer against a bright sky.

Best question - would the driver have faired better had he actually been in control?

From YouTube and TV drama like HTH - I suspect most shit themselves and choose to not make a decision...

But if the driver had been attentive then they most likely wouldn't have been in that serious situation in the first place.

Yes. The semi had almost cleared the highway by the time he hit it, almost any braking at all would have saved him. The car plowed into the truck at full speed.

I can only hope autonomous driving will be banned because I love to drive.

It's actually not a bad idea. Think about it, if it can gather the clueless drivers together and move them in an orderly fashion other than them randomly scattered all over the place, it would be much more enjoyable for the people who want to drive.
